Bobby Valentine on Kei Igawa

The annual BBWAA awards dinner isn’t until Jan. 28. But the New York chapter hosted a dinner at Yankee Stadium last night to roast outgoing chairman Pete Caldera of the Bergen Record. It was a fun night hosted by new chairman Dan Graziano of the Star-Ledger.

Bobby Valentine was nice enough to attend and we had a great conversation during dinner. I didn’t take notes but he gave a little scouting report on Kei Igawa.

He said Igawa used to have a big curveball but now has more of a slider. Bobby said his changeup might be his best pitch. “There’s just something about him,” he said. “He doesn’t give in.”

Igawa played in the Central League and Bobby manages Chiba Lotte in the Pacific League, so the teams don’t play often. But he thinks Igawa will help the Yankees.
