Sunday is the last great day of football. Unless your team is in it, the Super Bowl is a waste of time. It’s more about the commercials, the halftime show (Prince? That’s the best they can do?) and the pools.
But this weekend is still fun. So here are my picks:
Saints 17, Bears 10: The Katrina angle is fine and it is a good story. But what get lost is the fact that the Saints have a versatile offense, a smart quarterback in Drew Brees and a creative coach in Sean Payton. The Bears have not played well in weeks and Rex Grossman takes way too many chances with the ball. Of the four QBs left in the playoffs, he’s clearly the worst. But there is snow in the forecast for Chicago, which could save the Bears.
Mighty Patriots 31, Colts 28: As a Patriots fan, this game terrifies me. I have total faith in the salary cap decisions of Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli. But if Adam Vinatieri wins the game with a late field goal (or worse, if Stephen Gostkowski loses it) then there is going to be a lot of explaining to do from Coach Chuckles. I do know this: Tom Brady will play better than he did last week because he can’t play any worse. The Colts looked good in two playoff games. But one was against clueless Herm Edwards and the other against Steve McNair. Their defense can be had and Lawrence Maroney will be the man. Plus, Peyton Manning is Alex Rodriguez in shoulder pads.
Last week: 2-2
Overall for the playoffs: 5-3
