The only player worse at retiring than Roger Clemens is David Wells. The hefty lefty agreed to a one-year deal with the Padres tonight that will pay him $3 million guaranteed. There are incentive clauses that could earn him an additional $4 million.
Wells is 43 and has 230 career wins. He was 3-5 with a 4.42 ERA last season, making only 13 starts because of knee injuries. Wells started the season with the Red Sox then was traded to San Diego.
As a public service to anybody wishing to pick a fight with Wells and sue him, the Padres play at the Mets Aug. 21-23. Alas, the Yankees do not play San Diego.
Your turn, Roger.
