The hot rumor of the last 24 hours has the Red Sox sending a package of prospects to Colorado for 1B Todd Helton.
Presumably the Rockies would pay some of the $90 million Helton is owed through 2011 (yes, 2011).
Helton is not the same hitter he once was but could still be a force. The bigger question is why Boston is suddenly spending so much money? $103 million for Daisuke Matsuzaka, $70 million for J.D. Drew and now millions more for Helton?
If you root for the Yankees, the idea of Boston getting older and less financially flexible is very appealing. Then again, perhaps the Boy Wonder is working on a side deal to unload Manny Ramirez.
I’m there there will be a segment of Yankee fans who will pound the panic button if Boston gets another name player. But have faith in what Brian Cashman is doing. The Yankees are proof that spending wildly doesn’t lead to winning the World Series.
