You might recall Carl Pavano. Tall guy, gets paid a lot, supposedly plays for the Yankees.

The big howling dog right-hander spent his winter in Arizona working out with a physical trainer and is physically ready to pitch again. He last appeared in a big-league game on June 27, 2005.

In an effort to get questions about his past out of the way before spring training, the Yankees are planning on putting him on a conference call sometime tomorrow.

If Pavano pitches as well as he did for the Florida Marlins, the Yankees could have a heck of a No. 4 or No. 5 starter. You can question his desire – and many do – but he needs to get back on the mound and pitch well. Otherwise he goes into history as a punch line.

Pavano has a new agent (the well-respected Gregg Clifton) and knows what the Yankees expect. How he handles the questions tomorrow will set a tone. He is down to his final chance with the team, his teammates, the press and the fans.
