Igawa gets a head start in Tampa

Peter Abraham

Kei Igawa has reported to Tampa and is working out at the minor-league complex according to some friends in the Japanese media.

Igawa wanted to get a head start and arrived in Tampa a few days ago. Smart move on his part.

Jorge Posada also showed up early and presumably will get a chance to catch Igawa a few times and get to know him before the official workouts get going.

Players are free to show up at work out in Tampa but are restricted to the minor-league fields across the street. Legends Field doesn’t open up until the official report date.

Will anybody be down there covering them 2 so we can get some words from Posada after the pitching session?

  2. TurnTwo

what is the reason for keeping the actual Tampa facilities closed? league mandated, or organizational preference?

  3. Melissa

    Wooooooooo! Baseball is almost here!

Igawa gets a head start in Tampa

Already, I like this guys attitude. I hope it stays with him all season! I should skip out of work tomorrow and have a look.

Good to hear that Igawa is down there getting ready. Even better that Posada is there with him.

  6. Doreen

This is a good, good thing. Plus, it means the season’s just around the corner!

  7. BillyJoBob

Wonder if John Henry called Theo today and said “Hey, Yanks are gettin all the headlines with their cheap import, make something up that our incredibly expensive guy has been working in secret away from media eyes for 2 weeks”

Escaping Bronx after ‘07 a possibility for A-Rod

Here’s another Article about Arod can opt out on his contract after 07 season By Jerry Crasnick. I hope Arod’s stay and I don’t want him leaving.

Russell: Are you asking if anybody will be covering spring training? Seriously? Most of the beat writers are headed down on Sunday or Monday.

Turn two: It’s a MLB thing. For whatever reason (insurance?) players have to work out at the minor league fields before the report date.

  10. Jake

I dont get some people. How can you post here on Yanks blogs and really ask if there will be people covering the Yanks in spring training?

  11. BillyJoBob

Sounded to me like he asked if there’s anybody there to get some info from Posada on his workouts with Igawa before Spring Training starts

  12. Russell W

I didn’t think they did much covering of Spring Training at least until the scrimmage games started so I wanted to see if anyone was down there yet to talk to Posada within the next few days. I like to have my news right away because I’m a spoiled Yanks fan :)

  13. Russell W

I know they cover spring training, but since these guys are down there early, they might be out of the medias eye until spring training starts?

  14. Kat

I am so happy! Let baseball begin!!!!

  15. Fernando Alejandro

I’d like to hear how Igawa looks. I’m hoping he can be the good 4 or 5 guy they projected him to be.

  16. Chris NY

I’m sure someone will get a quote from Posada today or tomorrow… We have plenty to read about during the off-season, I’m sure now that they’re starting to work-out a bit, someone will be there.

[...] Kei Igawa is already in Tampa. Peter Abraham of LoHud posted this on his blog: Kei Igawa has reported to Tampa and is working out at the minor-league complex according to some friends in the Japanese media. [...]

This is from the AP today on Igawa…Japanese LHP Kei Igawa had a long toss session during his first early workout at the Yankees’ spring training complex.
So, Russell, someone is down there, and they spoke to Jeter about Clemens, I’m sure you’ll that released later today or in tomorrow’s papers.

  19. Jason

Matsuzaka started his training a week ago so hopefully he tires earlier in the season. HA.

  20. bardos

that espn article on A-Rod is here

  21. bardos

oops, sorry. no html coding on this site.

errr… not too much word wrap either. oh well, onward and upward.

  23. Russell W

    Thanks Joe

  24. Jorge

Great news. I can now smell baseball. Good to notice Igawa is working out. He’ll have a great season. We’ll see.

  25. R.J.Pinstripes

Great move by Iggy and (esp.) Jorge! Positive approach by both players to get off to a good start! I like it.

  26. R.J.Pinstripes

Hey, Pete, I will be down in ST for 4 games March 17-March 20. It would be great if I could stop by and say hello to you. Two games at Legend’s and one in Clearwater and one in Dunedin. Bob

  27. Doreen

Thanks for the link, Bardos. Good article; I liked the breakdown of the three different possible scenarios for Alex stays/Alex goes. I’d like to hope things work out this season and that the Yankees keep him around. What team wouldn’t want all those records broken in their uniform? Especially the Yankees.

Pete, I went back and read some of the archived blogs from last season. It’s great stuff — it ends up being like a journal of the season. And it’s a great appetizer for this one!

  28. Baseball Prospectus unveils its Yankee prospect list » OTB Sports

[...] And Pete Abraham reports – Jorge Posada and Kei Igawa, as well as top prospects Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, Dellin Betances, Jose Tabata and Jesus Montero have already reported to the Yanks training facility in Tampa. Good to see that work ethic. [...]

  29. Stuart

If Arod did leave which I doubt greatly the Yanks would save $16 mill a yr for I think 3 more years….

They would really be lowering the payroll…

  30. Chris NY

but we’d also be losing a perennial all-star third-baseman, and I’d expect that some or all of the 18M (he’s owed 81M, 27 of which Texas is repsonsible for) would be spent on a replacement, or for a 1B and 3B.

  31. Jake

Try finding a 3b to replace maybe the greatest hitter in the game.

    Hard huh?

    Maybe Aaron Boones out there.

  32. Chris NY

I think I read he took a utility infielder spot somewhere. Pretty far from the potential the Yankees thought he had when they originally made that trade for him.

  33. Grace

Just learn that Kei is married, he announced in his own official website on 2/7, that’s a suprise to a lot of people I think…

He said it is their decision to announce the news after they(Kei and his wife) are in USA.

Unlike the most japanese baseball player, Kei’s wife is just a normal female, I mean normal is that most of them marry with anchors, based on my memory….

anyway, wish the couple can have wonderful time in US…
