That the off-season is over sank in today when my BBWAA credential arrived in the mail.
BBWAA members receive a credential that’s good for admission to any MLB park all season. It’s the only credential you need all season, which makes it pretty easy. It also identifies you to the players and managers as somebody who covers baseball regularly and (supposedly) isn’t some dope.
If you try and ask Reggie Jackson a question, he literally grabs your credential and looks to see who you are.
The credentials are numbered based on how long you’ve been a member of the BBWAA. Dave Anderson of the Times, for instance, is No. 1. He has been in the BBWAA since 1952. Last year, the final number was 772.
I started out with 739 in 2001 and I’ve moved up to 445 this season. Mr. October should like that the first time I ask him a question.
