Phil Hughes showed up early in Tampa to start his bid for a spot on the roster.
The Yankees seem intent on sending Hughes to Class AAA Scranton. It’s far easier to control his workload there then it would be in New York. Hughes is only 20 and the Yankees do not want to load innings on him at this stage of his career.
If a need arises in June or July and he is pitching well, then he comes up. Hughes is too good to just toss out the plan the team has for him. There is a long list of young pitchers who were rushed to the majors and suffered major injuries.
