There was a horde of media here today to get the thoughts of Brian Cashman and Joe Torre.

A few highlights:

* Torre wants to talk to Bernie Williams and seems inclined to try and talk him into coming to camp, if only to try and make the team. Cashman didn’t seem too concerned.

* Cashman is more concerned with speaking to Mariano Rivera about his comments Monday about his contract status. But the GM seems to want to wait until the end of the season.

* If Torre is worried about his contract status, he didn’t show it. He said his biggest concern was making sure it didn’t have an impact on the players. Asked whether he wanted to manage next season, Torre said he didn’t know yet.

George Steinbrenner made a brief appearance and was chased by a large group of reporters. He gave short answers to a few questions. He said his health was fine, he thinks the Yankees have a good team and Torre does not have to win it all to return.

Steinbrenner owns the team and is obviously consulted about big decisions. But it grows clearer every day that Steve Swindal and Cashman run the team. Steinbrenner did not look good and was moving slowly.

Meanwhile, please give me feedback regarding the audio clips. I basically threw them up unedited. Does that work for you?

We’re here to serve at the blog. It’s easy to post them, so let me know what’s best.
