The Yankees are close to announcing that Ron Villone has accepted a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training.
Villone was 3-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 70 appearances last season.
The Yankees have many ways they can go in the bullpen. Rivera, Proctor, Farnsworth and Vizcaino are locks and I believe they want to keep Mike Myers as a specialist.
Villone, Brian Bruney, Chris Britton, Jose Veras and Sean Henn will be among those competing for jobs. It also makes sense that they would keep a starter-type (such as Jeff Karstens) as a long man.
But Villone, a former starter, can go multiple innings.
UPDATE, 1:28 p.m.: They just handed out the release. One-year, minor-league deal. He could make close to three million. The Yankees now have 63 players on the spring roster.
