Nice quick day today as the pitchers and catchers reported for physicals at 7:30 a.m. The clubhouse opened to the media at 9 a.m. and we’re already finished.
There were group interviews with Mo Rivera and Andy Pettitte (audio coming soon) and I spent some time talking to T.J. Beam, Darrell Rasner, Humberto Sanchez and Chien-Ming Wang.
Sanchez is a big guy (listed at 6-6, 270) but appeared to be in good shape. He has been in Tampa for several weeks. Wang spent the last month in Arizona at Brett Fischer’s facility and has already thrown six bullpens. Beam also looks good.
Rivera spoke with Brian Cashman last night and took great pains to explain that he’s not angry with the Yankees regarding their desire to wait until after the season to discuss a contract extension.
“I’m good,” he said. “I’m fine. Really I am.”
Pettitte talked in general about how pleased he was to be back. “It’s like Groundhog Day,” he said. “Not much has changed.”
As we were talking to Pettitte his cell phone rang and the ring tone was “I’m So In Love With You.” Appropriate for Valentine’s Day.
Pettitte grabbed the phone and spoke briefly. “That was my wife,” he said sheepishly. “I meant to change that song before I got around the guys.”
The phone rang again a few minutes later and it was the theme music from “Rocky.”
We thought for sure it was Roger Clemens but it wasn’t.
