Joe encourages Bernie to come to camp

Lots of news today. Let’s start with this:

Joe Torre told us that he spoke with Bernie Williams yesterday and encouraged him to come to camp. Torre then went on to say he wasn’t locked into using a platoon at first base because Doug Mientkiewicz has even splits against righties and lefties.
The only way Bernie could make the team is if they go without a platoon at first.

Torre made it clear that Bernie will not be playing any first.

Brian Cashman said basically the same thing, that many options are open. But that Bernie has to come to camp and prove he’s worth a spot. The best he is getting is a non-roster invitation.
