Spring training instructors

Peter Abraham

I received an e-mail today asking who the spring training instructors are. Good question.

The “guest instructors” are Yogi Berra, Goose Gossage, Frank Howard, Reggiee Jackson, Hector Lopez, Stump Merrill and Graig Nettles.

The Major League staff is Joe Torre, Larry Bowa, Ron Guidry, Joe Kerrigan, Kevin Long, Don Mattingly, Rich Monteleone, Tony Pena and Ron Thomson.

Several members of the minor league staff are in the big-league camp including Dave Miley, Gil Patterson and Gary Denbo.

Thanks for the info. Pete! Keep up the great work on the blog.

I hope Nettles does some work with ARod this spring.

I don’t mean to sound rude, but with the much older ex-players such as Yogi, how much do they contribute instruction-wise?

Wow – blast from the past!
When I was a kid I went to the first ever Bat Day at the Stadium, and I got a Hector Lopez bat. Always had a soft spot for the guy since then. You know what he has been up to beside guest instructing in ST?

RBJ, I’d think Yogi Berra knows a thing or two about being a successful baseball player. The wisdom of elders is a very valuable thing. Beyond that, what better way to inspire a team than to have the man who won more World Series than any one else in baseball history hanging around camp and flashing his rings?

Thanks Cliff, I was just wondering. I couldn’t imagine him squatting down to show the youngsters how to catch. Just wanted to know his role.

I want to see Frank and Reggie in a HR hitting contest. ;-) I bet Frank would win.

I was the one who asked about former players being involved with the team in the mailbag questions a couple weeks ago, so I love seeing these old names. I’m particularly stoked about seeing Goose on the list and my childhood hero “Puff” Nettles. I spent hours in the backyard growing up in Jersey emulating Graig, and I agree with SAM that I hope he works a bit with ARod. Not bashing Alex (as vogue as it seems to be), but it can’t hurt having one of the best all-time hot corner dudes doling out some advice.

What uniform numbers are the major league coaches wearing this season?

    Thank you.
