The plan today at Legends Field

Peter Abraham
February
16

The Yankees are watching a media training video at the moment (lesson one, never say anything) and will be on the field around 10:15.

Today is the first bullpen session for the relievers. They are grouped like this:

1: Rivera, Farnsworth, Myers, Proctor, Vizcaino

2. Beam, Britton, Villone, Veras, Henn

3. Bean, Whelan, Kennard, Kozlowski, Bruney

I’m curious to watch Kevin Whelan pitch. He is one of the prospects they picked up from Detroit for Gary Sheffield. And of course everybody will watch Mariano.

The bullpen sessions will start at 11:30. I’ll be upstairs (and blogging) around 2 p.m. hopefully. It all depends on whether Carl Pavano breaks a chair over Mike Mussina’s head.

Based on the reaction of some members of the media toward Pavano for his decision to shift the blame on to them for the perception of his alleged malingering, I would suggest that he gets his own personal copy of the media training video.

Good point on Whelan, he could figure into the mix to be one of the guys who ultimately succeeds Rivera.

  2. DesignatedBlogger

I’d love to see that training video. Can I download it? Who produced it, MLB? Were any actual reporters involved in making it? Does it recite all the standard cliched answers, like in Bull Durham? It must be funny for the veterans to have to sit through that.

Carl Pavano break a chair over Mike Mussina’s head? More like break an arm over his head.

  3. Wolf In Pinstripes

Hmmm… Mussina’s open comments about Pavano bring on this “Media Training session”, maybe? LOL

Pete, we do expect pictures of any clubhouse fights. You know that, right? 8^)

  4. Fernando Alejandro

Sheffield use to get his own copy of the training video along with a pocket sized field manual, and a 4 cd instuctional set. Did him no good.

  5. Dohtem

Thanks Peter, Can you upload Kevin Whelan today bullpen session? thanks

  6. Dohtem

I meant Photo of Kevin Whelan.

  7. yankz

Pavano would hurt his back picking up the chair.

  8. Rob

Here is a video of Whelan closing out FSL ASG:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG7xr9-zOL4.

  9. rbj

Bean, as in Colter Bean? I thought the Yankees had released him at the end of last season. Is he a non roster invitee?

I’ll make no joke about Pavano in a fight. It’s a fish in barrel situation.

  10. Mike S.

Interesting. T. J. Beam in Group 2 and Bruney in Group 3. Hmmm……

  11. Bob Reagan

Hey, I want to hear about all of them. Who really caught your eye and why etc. would be great to read.

  12. Dan Lat

Pete, thanks so much. You really do such a goob job, and you help us fans feel as if we are really there.

Also, let us know how the food is ata the first annual Igawa dinner.

On a baseball note though, does anyone find it odd that Bruney is in group 3? Perhaps the Yankees are alarmed by his high walk rate, and are giving him the chance to prove to them he is worthy of a bullpen spot. As it stands now, I think group 1 (Rivera-Farnsworth-Vizcaino-Proctor-Myers) will obviously make the pen w/o question, but Britton and Villone/Henn will probably fill the last spot. Henn and Villone could both act as the secondary lefty, and both have experience starting as well. The Long-man, 2nd lefty I guess. Britton will def. have the edge over Bruney because of his power potential as well.

  13. TurnTwo

same as the starters yesterday, i’m guessing while there is some semblance or reasoning of who pitches in what group, dont read into the actual groups themselves too much.

after the givens (MO, Proctor, Farnsworth, Vizcaino, Myers), the other spots in that bullpen will depend on the actual performance over the next month and a half moreso than the actual group of players they are with for the session.

  14. Wolf In Pinstripes

I agree with TurnTwo that we shouldn’t read too much into the groups after group one. However, if there WERE meaning behind their group assignments, Beam over Bruney doesn’t surprise me. After all, didn’t Beam have a stellar winter?

  15. cjc

I think people need to stop trying to over think the reasoning behind the bp groups it really doesn’t matter one bit at all every group is going to throw for the same amount of time in front of the same people

  16. EV

    Funniest. Blog entry. Ever.

  17. Deep to Left

It’s touch to hit someone over the head with a chair when your big fat lazy arse is planted firmly in it.

  18. Deep to Left

    Sorry – I meant “It’s tough…”

  19. SAM

    Phreek,

Unfortunately I reside in Boston for the time being and I have yet to find a sox fan that is excited about Henry’s racing team. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

    26-6

  20. sverlyn

    [i]it is a great time to be a fan of the-ole(third place)-towne-team.

  21. sammy

I’ll never understand the purpose of another team’s fans – even that of one from “the Nation,” who has collectively returned to lamenting only two-plus years after their last World Series win – coming to a rival’s blog to throw out their opinions.

    just to stir the pot?
I guess, if someone’s got enough time on their hands to post something like that… obviously they can spend a little more time in a charity, where they time would be worth exponentially more.

    that just befuddles me.

  22. rbj

Phreek, how about winning the division once in a while.

  23. Angel

    yawns @ Phreek.

At least it got its name right, though.

  24. SJ44

How about making the playoffs first, then think about winning a division title?

  25. swo

So what Phreek is saying is that the Red Sox really are the new Evil Empire?

  26. Fernando Alejandro

Oh everyone, the arrival of Phreek just means one thing, baseball season is just around the corner.

  27. LC

It’s mighty bold for a fan of team that finished 12 games back the year before and has AT LEAST as many question marks on their team this year to be talking smack. Like Sam said, 26-6. Aint no comeback in the world for that.
BTW, tell me one person other than you and your mother who thinks John Henry is the best owner in baseball.
Oh and Steinbrenner doesnt give to charity, right? He and the Yankees have given at least as much if not more to it then Henry has. Who matched MLB’s donation to the Tsunami victims? And while Henry is busy buying half of Roush racing, which I’m still trying to figure out how that helps the Red Sox, the Yankees are planting their flag in China.
But yeah I’d rather have my teams logo on a race car that no one will probably even see.
    Go home.

  28. Angel

Could you please learn how to use english capitalization rules properly, Phreek? It’s really not that hard.

  29. Angel

Honestly, it’s like reading the rantings of someone starting their own cult.

  30. LC

    Derek Jeter-4
    Mariano Rivera-4
    Jorge Posada-4
    Andy Pettite-4
    Your point is?
And it’s hard to choke against a team when your at home watching it on TV.

  31. SAM

    Phreek,
You want to count WS rings? Well I could easily play that game but I’ll pass. Who is the sox closer again? Did you see the latest picture of your boy d-mats? Hes got a nice set of man boobs and a pretty good gut going. Schilling must be proud.

  32. SAM

I think I would consider 2000 a part of this decade.

  33. LC

Umm in the past decade the Yankees have won 3 World Series. Decade=10 years. But no, you’re smart.

  34. asburyboss

Phreek…catch the Blue Jays first, then come see us.

you’re Wild Card Dynsasty ended last year.

  35. LC

OK I’m leaving. You’re obviously illiterate. Or thirteen.

  36. Fernando Alejandro

Its difficult to argue with someone when your only comeback is, “they haven’t won one in the last 6 years.” But then again, its difficult to bash a team whose been as dominant as the Yankees throughout their entire history.

  37. Lardin

Hey Phreek… A decade is ten years. 1997-2007 In the last Decade, the Yankees have 3 world series championships and have played in two more. They have won the AL East every year.
Despite everyone saying this is the year the Sox finally top the Yankees they havent come close…..

  38. SJ44

Ah, baseball season is around the corner. Illiterate Red Sox fans cropping up crowing about their team.

When its August, and they are 8 out, Manny has quit on them AGAIN, Julio Lugo and JR Drew are the new “bad guys” of Boston, and Dice-K proves to be a servicable, but not superstar pitcher, Red Sox fans will go into hiberation again and begin to talk about Belichick and the Patriots chances for ‘07.

To talk so boldly about a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2004 and didn’t make the playoffs last year is the rite of spring.

To act like winning the WS is some foregone conclusion is sheer stupidity. Then again, nobody confuses Red Sox fans with being very smart.

  39. Fernando Alejandro

Oh people, don’t be angry with our friend from the other side. He’s clearly just stirring up the good old rivalry. Why do you feel the need to defend the Yankees to a Red Sox fan? The reason they give us this much attention in the first place is because they know they’re second to someone. They don’t bother the Orioles blogs like this.

  40. Travis G.

first off, try winning the division once before you do any trash-talking?

second, Matsuzaka has man-boobs? I missed that pic. Link please.

  41. sammy

    Peter-

    kudos to you.
    you’ve attracted “them.”
you know your work is appreciated when people who despise the team you’re writing for are posting.

    great job.
    :)

  42. Doreen

Why are you all encouraging this guy? Just ignore it and it’ll go away.

I’m starting to get very excited about the season starting. I can’t wait to hear more about the pitchers, especially Igawa and, yes, Pavano. Isn’t it nice that the Yankees have so much depth in the minors these days as far as pitching is concerned?

  43. mark

Hey Pete, I am also very excited about Whelan. He’s got a great arm and I’ve seen reports that compare him to Francisco Rodriguez. Let us know what you see with him, and all of us Yanks fans appreciate the updates.

  44. Floyd Landis' Hormones

Well in that case, thank God Johnny Diego isn’t Brian Cashman.

  45. Wolf In Pinstripes

“This decade Yankees won zero world series.

Redsox won 1. Enough said. :>”

Fair enough. Want to talk about the freaking CENTURY before that? Snap!

  46. SAM

The picture of D-mats with man boobs can be found at http://www.bostondirtdogs.com. Just scroll down the pic is under the title Fatsuzaka.

  47. Jake

We got some real clowns commenting now on the blog. Personal insults, trying to be funny. I guess thats what happens when you get really big like Petes getting.

The riff raff come out of the woodwork like LC, Phreek, Diego, and Sam.

  48. SAM

    Jake,
I actually used to post under the name Scott but I saw someone else using that name so I changed mine to my intials. Thanks

  49. Anthony

Well, it’s long past 2 PM and Pete hasn’t been blogging. Are we to assume Pavano did break a chair over Moose’s head?
