Clemens deep into his annual act

Roger Clemens told a Houston television station that there was an “80-20″ chance he would retire. This is the same guy who once said he was “99.9 percent” retired. That was 84 starts and 38 wins ago.
Know two things about Clemens: He has never left a dollar on the table and he loves the attention.
Two predictions: If Bernie Williams comes to camp, he will be the Opening Day DH and Clemens will start one of the games against the Mets at Yankee Stadium during the June 15-17 series.

Pete,
I thought this team wanted to get younger, faster, and have more energy. Hopefully when u say opening day Dh it’s also his last hoorah and opening day becomes Bernie W. day. Roger against Mets. U forgot to say he strikes out 15 and hits a hr to boot. Bold predictions.
Damn, Pete, you are blowin’ your own bet. Might as well get the credit card ready for the Cheesecake Factory!
Hang tough, even though I too see Bernie on this roster Opening Day.
I want to see Clemens in pinstripes as much as any other Yankee fan, but I’m really sick of his act…

Oh thats gooooood!
Clemens wants to be courted.
Torre sounds pretty intent of somehow shoehorning a useless Bernie Williams onto this team. They’re both living in the past. I look forward to life after Joe Torre in 2008.
I’m sick of Clemens; let the guy pitch for the Astros or not at all. The Yanks have much younger, and much less expensive options at AAA. If Pavano and Igawa suck call up Hughes and Sanchez, but forget about Roger; I completely agree with you Pete, the guy’s act is wearing thin.
I am on the fence with the Bernie stuff. I do think they need 5 OF’s. I really do. I don’t think they need 3 first basemen.
Geez, Jason Giambi can’t play first at all now??? For the money he ties up, that’s just way too much for a DH, IMO.
If Bernie can still play (and that’s a big “if”), I’d rather have him on the roster than Andy Phillips. Andy Phillips on his best day isn’t the player Bernie Williams is at the end of his career.
Josh Phelps? No idea. Rule 5 guy, could be a gem, could be just a Rule 5 guy who gets returned to Baltimore after the spring.
That’s why, if Bernie still wants to play, he needs to come to Tampa. If Phelps turns out to be “just a guy”, and Bernie can still play, I’d rather have Bernie.
Re: Clemens, its best to ignore the “saga” and just focus on the players who are already here.
I’d still LOVE to have Clemens for the last 3-4 months of the season. Not only can he still compete and pitch, he can be a terrific mentor to Hughes.
I do agree the “saga” is getting old. I just choose to ignore it and concentrate on other things or I would join everybody else in being sick of it.
You’ve gone from betting dinner that Bernie won’t be here, to saying there’s a chance he DH’s on Opening Day. Which makes me think that stuff is going down in Tampa that is making you slowly change your mind. Not good news for those of us that want Bernie to retire
The Bernie Williams thing is pathetic. Retire, Bernie.
Having Bernie around taking playing time from Cabrera is just a real bad idea. Bottom line is Bernie’s presence on the roster makes the NYY a worse team. I’m beginning to think the same about Torre. The sentimentality and pining for the past is a losing mentality. I wish Cash would shut this nonsense down.
Oh wait, please tell me that Torre isn’t actually going to put Bernie in the OF too?
That’s just wrong.
If Bernie’s on the team, he’ll play. Torre isn’t going to bury him on the bench for weeks on end.
To think that there were people who wanted to deal Melky for Mike Gonzalez based on the belief that the Yankees would try to bring in another 4th OFer.
Why wouldn’t they say to Giambi, “Hey look, we’re paying you over $20 million a year. This month we’re going to skip the Vegas strippers, take some ground balls and practice our throws to 2nd.”
We have 4 first basemen. None of them are going to do well with all the platooning. No time to get into a groove.
Clemens will be just good enough to fall short in the playoffs.
He is not a team player; and the Yankees really need to foster a team spirit.
Bernie, Mint-cave-itch, and Phillips or Phelps should all make the team, Giambi should be told to burn his glove, and we should carry 11 pitchers like every other team in baseball.
Considering the way Joe uses the pen, what exactly will a seventh relief pitcher do on our team, other than work on his tan and give the occasional hotfoot to the sixth relief pitcher, who will also never play.
Name me the last team to win a World Series that didn’t have a veteran bat with some pop on its bench.
Why does the Yankees need veteran pop on their bench when they have so much offense anyway. Good point about the 12 pitchers (great in theory). Torre won’t use them all and the ones on the bench will be so rusty when they do pitch they will stink anyway. History shows that Torre has his favorites and he uses them. Is this new bullpen going to be so well rounded that it changes that? If there’s room for Bernie ,let him play if not the Yanks will do just fine without Bernie and his “pop”. Which by the way he has shown not to have coming off the bench. Also, if Torre over uses him (4th OF) instead of Melky or even Long then that won’t help the Yanks. Bye Bye Bernie- retire we love you!
Even if we took eleven pitchers, Bernie Williams has no place on this team. He’s a horrible defensive OF, he’s an awful pinch hitter, and he’s an instinctually poor base runner with diminishing speed. Giambi can’t play first because he physically can’t hold up doing so and any other DH ABs that he doesn’t take will go to one of the OF, needing a day off to rest/get Melky some PT.
Cashman needs to end this and tell everyone that it’s over for the good of the team. If Joe, Mo, Derek, Damon, the fans etc. don’t like that there’s no room for Bernie, that’s too bad for them. They’ll get over it.
“Two predictions: If Bernie Williams comes to camp, he will be the Opening Day DH and Clemens will start one of the games against the Mets at Yankee Stadium during the June 15-17 series.”
i think you’re half right.
