Yankees general partner Steve Swindal just (unexpectedly) met with the media in the press box.

He did not answer specific questions about his arrest for DUI last week other than to apologize for his actions and promise to do better.

Swindal was asked whether he was still in line to succeed George Steinbrenner. “I can’t answer that,” he said. “It would be speculation.”

Swindal has a court date in March. Today was his first day back working at Legends Field since the incident.

Here is the audio:

Man, and you guys think spring training is boring! Geez, Pete, you have about two weeks worth of stories just off the last 5 days.

Should be fun to get Jeter’s and Torre’s reaction re: Arod’s comments tomorrow.

Hey Pete, how do you media guys know where the important interviews are being given? Are you given a sheet in the beginning of the day or is there an announcement over a loudspeaker that A-Rod wants to speak? It seems like you catch everything there.

Claire: Gammons wasn’t there and there was no drama, just a nine-minute interview.

Russell: The PR staff gives you a heads up.

People make mistakes. If he doesn’t have a drinking problem, and he doesn’t become a recidivist, I don’t see why anyone would ask whether or not it should affect his ability to succeed George, especially since, in effect, he already has.

Swindal is heading up Steinbrenner’s bid to take over NY thoroughbred horse racing. Swindal claims he will restore integrity to NY racing. It will be hard for him to do if he is as drugged up as the horses.
