Rest easy, Schilling isn’t on the way

Huge clown Red Sox right-hander Curt Schilling told a Boston radio station this morning that he plans to file for free agency after the season. Theo Epstein has decided not to offer him a contract extension until after the season.

Schilling said he was disappointed and planned to test the market for the first time in his career. But the 40-year-old says he would not consider the Yankees.

“That’s not a place I think I could finish my career after what’s happened here,â€? he said.

I’m not sure Brian Cashman, who is trying to make the team younger, would consider Schilling in the first place. He is also easily the most detested opposing player in the clubhouse. Eyes roll like lemons on a slot machine whenever Schilling’s name comes up.

Meanwhile, El Duque Hernandez has been shipped back to New York by the Mets because of a back problem. Which is shocking because he is only 72.

only 72? You’re giving him the benefit of the doubt huh lol

    Dear Curt–

Based on the photos of you from spring training don’t you think that at 40 years old and trying to get an extension you might consider coming into camp in a little better shape. FYI We Yankees fans (and more likely the Yankees) don’t want you to finish your career in New York either. But then again you have never met a microphone who wasn’t your friend or have never been slow to comment on something that was not even valid or a possibility.

  3. DesignatedBlogger February 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 am

Let him go rejoin Randy in Arizona. The Sox would be crazy to give him an extension at this time of year.

  4. Tim February 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 am

Huge clown. heh heh. I liked Buster Olney’s description of him as a “quiet clubhouse leader”. yeah right. he bugs me.

Although I will say this – I live near Philly and saw him pitch when he was in his prime. Consistently hitting the high 90′s in late innings. He was pretty darn good.

Schilling’s near 4 era is not welcome here.

  6. Rich February 22nd, 2007 at 10:50 am

    Just shut up, Curt.

  7. jennifer February 22nd, 2007 at 11:10 am

Red LIght Curt at it again! I don’t recall Cash asking Crt if he wanted to play for the Yankees. Curt looks like he is pregnant with twins!!

Check out http://www.bostondirtdogs.com for MY worst nightmare.

Please no…if Big Stein has one more move in his bag of tricks it would be that one.

  9. asburyboss February 22nd, 2007 at 11:12 am

I forget who said it, but this is the best quote about Schilling:

    Every 5th day he’s a horse. The other 4 he’s a horse’s ass

El Duque tripped on a wet floor rushing for the Early Bird, Blue Plate special at the St. Lucie diner

The only way Curt could end up in pinstripes is if he buys a jersey at Modell’s. Or joins the Rockies.

On the other hand, if he’s on the Yankees, he won’t have time to run for office.

  12. Jorge (México) February 22nd, 2007 at 11:34 am

I’m sooooooooooooooo sad. Devastating news!!!!!!!! The most intelligent baseball player ever doesn’t want to come to the Yankees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I won’t be able to sleep in a month or two. PLEASE Curt, please, don’t do this to us. The Yankees need you so much. I can’t even imagine our 2008 rotation without Curt Schilling. I’m shocked.

I wouldn’t want that loud-mouthed, over-rated, over-the-hill fool anywhere in Yankee Stadium unless he’s on the opposing mound getting pounded.

The funny thing is, the guy would LOVE to be a Yankee. The only reason he says otherwise is to keep himself in good graces with the Sox fans.

Christ, the guy posts on NYYFans using the handle “Gehrig38.” His favorite player is Lou Gehrig and you’re telling me he’d never want to be a Yankee?! Bullshit.

  14. JENNIFER February 22nd, 2007 at 11:44 am

“Christ, the guy posts on NYYFans using the handle “Gehrig38.â€? His favorite player is Lou Gehrig and you’re telling me he’d never want to be a Yankee?! Bullshit.”

are you sure thats him?? I post there from time to time and will have to check out his messages. did he say something that made you think it was him?

  15. saucy February 22nd, 2007 at 11:45 am

Yeah, he’d sign here if given the opportunity, and that’s a big if. And is Epstien trying to be Cashman these days with the “wait ’til after the season for an extension” philosophy?

As for Duque: It’s official, Scranton will have a better opening day rotation than the Mets!

  16. Tim February 22nd, 2007 at 11:51 am

“are you sure thats him?? I post there from time to time and will have to check out his messages. did he say something that made you think it was him?”

Yes, it’s him. Search his posts and you’ll see it’s him. He’s even said on radio shows that he posts on both NYYFans and Sons of Sam Horn as Gehrig38.

  17. saucy February 22nd, 2007 at 11:56 am

Also, from that dirtdogs link: have to laugh that Manny is going to car auctions instead of ST. LOL

  18. sunny615 February 22nd, 2007 at 11:56 am

The worst part of that BostonDirtDogs pic is that they pasted Curt’s head on Jeter’s body.

    ew.

Schilling is a huge Bush supporter…Hey, there you go, Curt. Uncle Sam wants you as a free agent. Time for you to REALLY support the war effort and join the Army.

A Bush supporter with the brains of an athletic supporter.

Imagine….a big-mouthed, self promoting blowhard like Schilling telling the world that his favorite player was Gehrig who was such a humble, dignified man.

  20. mel February 22nd, 2007 at 12:12 pm

Schilling’s just being a tease. He wants Big Stein to chase something he can’t have. Thank god there’s a new Warden in the asylum. lol

  21. Stacey February 22nd, 2007 at 12:22 pm

Good Curt. Don’t ever come here. Blech.

  22. Jess in PA February 22nd, 2007 at 12:35 pm

What I’m curious about is whether Curt is making these statements voluntarily, or responding to a specific question. This is the second time we’ve heard this line this spring from him. Is he being directly asked if he’d go to the Yankees? If so, then I can see why he’d answer the question and say no, particularly considering how touchy RS nation is about that. If he’s just spouting off, then that’s something else.

Either way, I can’t stand the guy, and will be forever grateful to never see him in pinstripes. Just that picture on Bostondirtdogs put me off my lunch.

  23. SJ44 February 22nd, 2007 at 12:38 pm

He represents himself in contract talks. He doesn’t use an agent. Its just negotiating rhetoric, nothing more. He will re-sign with the Red Sox after the season.

That is, unless the 20 extra pounds he is currently carrying prevent him from pitching well. At that point, the Sox will “Johnny Damon” him and move on.

And, no, he won’t be coming to NY. Probably would go back to Philadelphia, if he needs a place to land.

  24. Phil February 22nd, 2007 at 12:44 pm

In a related story, Boston Area “Friendly’s” owners are pulling out.

I do wonder if we’ll still see Dunkin Donuts logo’s on the backdrop at Fenway if their poster boy leaves.

  25. Chevy February 22nd, 2007 at 12:53 pm

Hey Curt…….keep your big mouth and your bloody sock elsewhere. NO THANKS!!!

  26. JoeD23 February 22nd, 2007 at 12:57 pm

This guy has beaten us so many times in big spots…I just want the Yanks to get one more shot at this guy when it counts and pummel him…

  27. Wolf In Pinstripes February 22nd, 2007 at 1:21 pm

God, that’s like Phyllis Diller telling George Clooney she’d never marry him. What is the point of it actually being said?? I liked it better when Schilling was with Philly and you rarely heard a peep out of him (compared to nowadays anyway).

  28. Phil February 22nd, 2007 at 1:22 pm

He was a bigmouth in Philly, too.

  29. blondlobo February 22nd, 2007 at 1:28 pm

My favorite Curt Schilling moment: A-Rod hits a walk-off HR when Schilling was the BoSox closer. Schilling’s expression as A-Rod jogs the bases is frozen into my memory. Oh, happy day!

  30. Macdawg February 22nd, 2007 at 1:29 pm

How come he couldn’t get Tavarez to be his spokesman like Manny? And some people call Tampa a circus. Looks like the 3rd place Red Slobs are imploding before Spring Training even begins.

  31. Wolf In Pinstripes February 22nd, 2007 at 1:40 pm

Phil, this is true. It just seems to me like it was less noticeable then.

  32. Fernando Alejandro February 22nd, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Who cares about Schilling? Let’s change the conversation to a more relevant topic, here are some proposals:

    1. What color shoes does Igawa wear?
    2. Who is the guy who cleans the spring training towels?
    3. Where in the world is Carmen San Diego?

Join in the fun! Post other more relevant conversations topics than Schilling being an idiot.

2007 could be the end of an era

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6491124
Interesting article from Rosenthal saying that ’07 could be the last year of the Yankee dynasty imo I don’t think it is because we are going to be getting a bunch more youngsters who are just coming into their own and will start a new era

    SilverBullet -

I think Rosenthal means that it could be a last hurrah for that all (but Jeter) remaining from the core group of the late 90s – Bernie, Posada, Mariano, and Joe Torre.

In addition – Abreu’s contract is up, and ARod could opt out. There is potential for turnover that we haven’t seen ina long time.

Odds are – Jorge and Mariano are re-signed, and Joe sticks around another year or two. His point is that nothing is locked in.

Also a solid bet – by 2008, Hughes is a #1 guy, Alberto Gonzalez could be the utility guy, and a guy like Sanchez or Ohlendorf could also be in the rotation.

Maybe Eric Duncan rebounds, and he’s at first base. By 2009, Tabata could be the right fielder.

  36. asburyboss February 22nd, 2007 at 3:46 pm

Tim…Schilling’s son is named “Gehrig Schilling”

it’s too bad he didn’t get a Golden retriever instead…good dog name, bad kid name

  37. saucy February 22nd, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Ha. This blog may lead to me eventually responding to that SI Mascot Ad…

  38. Skippy February 22nd, 2007 at 7:02 pm

Remember when Schilling was pushing his way out of AZ? Didn’t he say he would go to either the Yankees or Red Sox? Then he gets signed by the Sox, and the next thing you know he shows up places wearing Yankee hater gear and acting like it has been his lifelong dream to be in Boston. And the Sox fans fell for his act. Come November he’ll probably be calling Cashman and proclaiming his burning desire to end his career as a Yankee. He makes me ill.
