Injury updates from today

* RHP Humberto Sanchez has a mild strain of his right forearm and was held out of action today. He is day to day.

* RHP Brian Bruney has a sore lower back, in the rib cage area. He said he has felt it since the first bullpen session of the spring. He received treatment after today’s workout. It’s uncertain whether he will throw as scheduled tomorrow.

* And finally … Carl Pavano has been injured again. The Rajah of Rehab was throwing batting practice when Alberto Gonzalez lined a ball off the bottom of his left cleat. But Pavano shook it off and finished his session, throwing 25 more pitches. Pavano does not use a screen when he throws BP. Ironically, he had hit Gonzalez with a pitch during BP on Thursday. Pavano said it was a little stiff and could miss some drills tomorrow but he expected to pitch as scheduled on Tuesday.

Said Brian Cashman: “He seems to be a heat-seeking missile.”

none of them sound too serious, although with pavano, you can never tell

  2. Jeff February 24th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

These seem like your regular spring training injuries. Especially Humberto’s injury he will be fine.

  3. Emobacca February 24th, 2007 at 3:17 pm

    See you in 2008 Carl

  4. Phil February 24th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

Isn’t Gonzalez the player Pavano nailed on Thursday?

  5. mark February 24th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

I don’t know about Sanchez; the guy has been injured throughout his minor league career. I sure hope he can stay injury free cause he good be pretty good.

  6. Russell February 24th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

Pete – this is my first time CLOSELY following the teams during the off-season. I noticed that, along with the Yankees, the Mets have their fair share of injuries in Spring Training. How common are these injuries/sprains in the off-season and do they usually linger into the season or is it just normal because everyone hasn’t been on the field in a while?

  7. Russell February 24th, 2007 at 3:38 pm

Phil – please read the whole post lol: “Ironically, he had hit Gonzalez with a pitch during BP on Thursday.”

  8. Jennifer February 24th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Whoa what a suprise carl again! i guess we won’t see him on the mound until june.

  9. Peter Abraham February 24th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

    Russell: Very, very common

  10. R.B. February 24th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

Carl is working on varying his repertoire by sustaining below-the-butt injuries this year.

  11. Bob B February 24th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

Any report on how the cleat is doing? lol

  12. Chevy February 24th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Goodness. Glass Carl is at it again. I’ll be surprised if he makes it out of ST alive!

  13. rbj February 24th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

Not Carl’s fault this time, and he did finish his session.

  14. Richard C February 24th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Abraham….Hey….Hey…..Hey!!! Pavano has a good start this year, he worked hard all winter, he is doing well and made his peace with the team. Give him a break! We have to get some positive energy going here. Lets give him some support, he will feel it. Please do not use the “Raj of Rehab” line anymore. Just do your job without the cheap shots.

  15. jay destro February 24th, 2007 at 5:25 pm

Richard… how is stating the obvious a cheap shot?

if it walks like a dog, quacks like a duck, it’s probably carl pavano

  16. Rey February 24th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

Richard, loosen up on the Pavano thing. Pete’s just messing. It’s obvious we all want him to succeed and contribute this season. Some nickname won’t kill anyone.

  17. Rich February 24th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Further evidence that life is really strange.

  18. CGramazio February 24th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

What did I tell you. Man, I should have taken bets.

  19. Richard C February 24th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

    Rey.

Its not at all obvious that we the fans want him to succeed. I have not heard any support for him, mostly jokes and making fun of him. This is MY team and these are MY players. Even Carl Pavano. This negativism is serious stuff. I believe the booing extended Arods slump last year. These are human beings. What if Carl P. was your son or your brother, or your father. How would you feel about it???!!!
Abraham is a leader here. Alot of people read him. He could potentially change this whole scene regarding Pavano with a few strokes of his pen.
I challenge you Peter, change the spirit of these conversations.

  20. Peter Abraham February 24th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Richard C: I challenge you to lighten up. The Rajah of Rehab line is just a little inside joke for the readers here. If I can’t have a little fun with my blog, there’s not much point to it.

Even Carl was making jokes today.

Sweeny Murti said, “Are you …”

And Carl cut in, ” … nervous that I have a bulls-eye on my back? Yes I am.”

    It’s all good.

  21. mark February 24th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

    Richard,
You seem to love defending Carla yet he hasn’t done jack for the Yanks in a year in a half. I don’t think the guy deserves the benefit of doubt until he proves that he can pitch in the regular season. I’ll believe in Carlie WHEN HE ACTUALLY DOES SOMETHING besides get hurt.

  22. asburyboss February 24th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

I didn’t know Carl’s Dad was named “Richard”

I hear ya Richard…we are ALL pulling for him- cuz we want to win.

  23. Richard C February 24th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

    Pete.

You have heard of body-mind relationship? I study and teach mind-spirit (energy) relationship. What a person thinks and feels affects the movement of energy in their body, in regard to these players it affects their performance. My whole point here is to let them know, think and feel, that we the fans support them. I believe ( I KNOW) that we can help these guys in their game simple with our support. It hurts me to hear these jokes. It hurt me to hear AROD booed last year. I can feel them psychicly. It doesn’t feel good.

  24. asburyboss February 24th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    hey Richard…stop bogarting the joint.

Pete: I think there’s more to your blog than having fun. You provide information. In fact, you’re my go to Yankee info pipe. And when you write something like that about Pavano, i think you underestimate its negative impact. It’s getting to the point that if Pavano takes a line drive off his face, he’ll be blamed for it. I’m no Pavano fan. I’ve never been a fan of signing one season wonders (hello, gary matthews), but here’s a guy who hid the fact that he was in a car accident that injured his ribs. That doesn’t sound like a guy looking for any excuse not to pitch.
The problem is, reporters can’t editorialize. In your blog, you give us the straight goods. When you say that stuff about Pavano, we take it as the straight goods. So what I’m saying is, give us the straight goods or editorialize. Don’t do both.

  27. asburyboss February 25th, 2007 at 9:53 am

Pete…don’t change a thing…most of us can tell when you are making a joke…and most of us laugh.

If Carl Pavano cannot handle a “Rajah of Rehab” joke which circulates around the inner circles of the NY media then he cannot handle NY…and trade him now.

  28. Jason February 27th, 2007 at 12:33 am

Wow, calm down there, some of ya’ll pretend like Carl Pavano is a 13 year old girl with confidence issues. Wait, like practically stealing basically 20 million dollars over the past two years wasn’t enough, we’r supposed to go and make him feel better? Would he like a small tea party for every time he pitches? Its a grown man, making millions and millions of dollars, who is NOT doing his job, and as witnessed by the Mussina comments, without solid excuse to say WHY he hasn’t been doing that job. If Carl Pavano actually reads this blog and can’t take a “Rajah of Rehab” joke, then he needs to leave town, because trust me, if he thinks this is bad, wait till he gets his ass boo-ed on opening day. I always felt, if there was one person who could ease A-Rod’s pressure, it was Pavano, because he better pitch his ass off, or he’s gonna hear it everywhere.
