Nice to hear him praise Matty DeSalvo.
I also was interested to hear his comment on Matt DeSalvo. I was listening to MLB Homeplate this AM and Billy Eppler was a guest and he singled Desalvo out as someone to really keep an eye on when asked other than HUghes (in terms of the younger guys) who he was really high on and said he was having a really good camp.
Nardi Contreras said the same thing in a Pinstripes Plus interview. DeSalvo is back and he’s in the deep mix at the AAA level.
Not to burst anybody’s bubble but if DeSalvo was so good, they wouldn’t have DFA’d him this winter. Supposedly he’s having a good camp but it’s only two weeks.
Does it cost money to go to Legends field and watch them work out? If so, how much? I wouldn’t mind going to Legends Field and just watching the Yankees practice.
It’s free, and I believe parking is free, as well. They start practice at 11:00 tomorrow, but it varies from day-to-day.

In 2005 DeSalvo had an outstanding year in AA and AAA. Last year, they were expecting him to be their first call up, after he was one of the last cuts in ST. But apparently he had a problem at home and ended up getting divorced. His 2006 was a disaster on the field perhaps as a result as he was demoted from AAA to AA and suddenly really struggled with control. Him being “back” as Nardi Contreras declared him the other day, is indeed good news for those of us who follow the Yankee system. This could have a happy ending, and would make a good story if he keeps it up, like he should. He throws 92-93 to both sides of the plate, and has very good and very varied secondary stuff.
I’m surprised Desalvo didn’t get picked up by somebody considering the pitching market. I mean, Bubba Crosby got picked up. I know Desalvo went through a divorce last year which seemed to suck the life out of him…like most women do.
How Did Hughes Pitch Peter? Any Uptdates? What about Clippard?
over at mlb.com the report was that Torre was impressed with Hughes, Clippard, Jackson and Wright from field 2.

i KNOW! what do you think we’ll miss more, his unifying clubhouse presence, the constant media circus he generates, his timely hitting, his impeccable fielding, or the numerous championships he’s helped deliver while playing in new york? it’s a toss-up, really.
the dude’s a hell of an offensive player, but don’t kid yourself. we won’t all miss him.

I’m sure all of the A Rod bashers could find another third baseman who can do what he does.
Maybe its jealousy about the money. I’m sure that they never fail at whatever it is they do.
Must have been great ball players too.

while we’re reminsicing about yankee greats, let’s look back a little less than a decade, when the team was winning championships.
i don’t give a rat’s ass who plays third as long as they win. a-rod may well be remembered as the best to ever play the game, but don’t try to tell me to cherish watching the guy frown and flail his way through the last 2 1/2 postseasons, not to mention the ongoing circus. if you enjoy watching a player break down mentally for weeks at a time, then absolutely, a-rod’s your guy.
personally, i’d just like to see the team win another championship. if he can help them do that, great. thus far, he hasn’t.
oh, by the way, everyone fails at their jobs. that comparison got old quite some time ago. let me know the next time you address the media to “admit” that you and a friend aren’t as close as you used to be, then i’ll entertain the idea that my life should ever be compared, in any way, to alex rodriguez’s.

i also love the rational that only great ballplayers should criticize a-rod.
obviously you’ve run a country, written a novel, recorded a hit song, painted a masterpiece, handled a room full of kindergarteners, etc. you’ve covered the entire spectrum of professions, i assume. otherwise, you’ve no right to criticize anyone, right? if i’m following your logic…

This time I used the “Download to iTunes” button to grab the podcast. When you get the audio that way, it shows up classified as Music, rather than as a Podcast. What was funny was that the “Genre” for this Joe Torre interview comes up as “Blues”

DeSalvo was never married. As for the season this year his arm looks hopefull for a monster season for him.
