So I go in the back of the press box to get some water and there’s a box if Hideki Matsui cookies. I tried one, it was kind of like a graham cracker. Not so great. But Jim Baumbach of Newsday loved his.

Do you use your cellphone camera for the pics you post here? Just curious. I guess it would be kind of weird for a beat reporter to carry around a digital camera.
well, baumbach has a tendency to exaggerate things…
Pete, I don’t know if you are old enough to remember or have tried a REGGIE! Bar….
I am. Yes, I am old enough to have had a REGGIE! bar.
So the obvious question is this…
If you ever have had a REGGIE! bar,
which do you prefer? The REGGIE! bar or the Matsui cookie?
Pete, if you want brownie points tell Matsui. “Oishii!” (oy-shee)when you see him. That means “Delicious!”
No Igawa milk to wash it down?
Mike, I remember the REGGIE! bars. I think I was around 10 when those came out. Pretty good candy bar, actually. heh
Chappy: Cell phone camera. Print reporters don’t tote around regular cameras and I am not a good photographer. The cell camera is the best I can do. Plus I think it adds a nice hint of idiocy to the blog.
Mike S: i do remember Reggie bars but I never had one.
In New England back in the day we had Big Yaz Bread. It was regular Wonder Bread with “Yaz” on the side in giant red letters. I believe as little tyke I had some sandwiches on big Yaz bread.
I still have a Reggie bar somewhere…
Pete, I think you do a great job with your cellphone camera. I myself don’t have one of those, and couldn’t think when I’d use it, so I kind of admire people who can figure out a legitimate use for one. (Aside from insurance people and realtors.)
What are the cookies called? I mean translation of the Japanese?
I have those cookies on my desk at work. A co-worker brought them back from Tokyo or something. Good cookies….
It says:
Major
Matsui [Hideki] “Sabure”
I think “Sabure” must be an imported French word. My wife says it means a cookie made with milk and eggs and whatever….
That’s a little vague, but it’s probably “sabret” or something. I’m too lazy to Google it.
I’m 45, so I was 16 when the Reggie bar came out.
Chocolate, caramel and peanuts.
I remember the 1978 home opener when the bars were given to the fans and Reggie homered. I forget how long it took the ground crew to clean up the field after fans threw the bars onto the field in “tribute”. It was a while, and it was funny.
Hey Pete, I was wondering if you ever would have time to go to the Yanks minor league complex in Tampa to see guys like Joba, Betances, and Kennedy getting ready for the minor league season. The blog is great and I realize its your job to write about the major league team, but there is such a wealth of talent in the Yankee organization and I would love to hear how guys like Joba and Dellin look. Anyways, thanks for the great posts and keep up the good work.
As much as I wanted to like them, Reggie Bars sucked.
Ahh, Reggie Bars! Bright orange wrapper with big blue letters spelling REGGIE and a likeness of Reggie swingin’ from the heels.
It brings back fond memories of 1978. I worked for an Organization that had a few Red Sox Fans and they were busting chops on our tight-knit group of Yankee Fans for most of the baseball regular season – until August & September…. The famous 1978 Playoff Game was held on a Monday afternoon in Fenway. Our Yankee Group and the Red Sox taunters left early to watch the fateful game. The next day our victorious group showed up early at our rivals’ office, decked out with Yankee gear, pennants, Boston Globe & Daily News newspapers, and banners….and we made our grand entrance by throwing a bunch of Reggie Bars to everyone….at 25 cents a throw!
We nearly got fired, but what a show it was!
wasn’t the Reggie Bar just a Baby Ruth smooshed into a circle?
It was good…
Pete: I’ve been trying to figure out why my stomach is bothering me. Then I read your blog and remembered I had that Matsui cookie straight off the plane from Japan. Now it makes sense.
the reggie bar was the first thing that came to mind when i saw that, too. i loved those things when i was a kid.
Mike Plugh – thanks for the translation. A “Sable” is a french butter cookie, very tender and delicate. Literal translation from the french is “sand.” If you’ve ever eaten one of those cookies they’re so delicate they crumble like sand.
