Bobby Abreu injured
OF Bobby Abreu strained an oblique muscle on his right side and could miss a week or two according to Joe Torre.
“He didn’t feel anything until he was hitting,” Torre said. “It’s a strain, it’s there.”
Audio to follow.
Abreu has left the stadium by the time we found out it. He was going for tests and it is expected he will be limited in what he can do for a while. Torre said that Abreu should be fine well in advance of Opening Day.
I asked Joe. This does not mean Bernie is flying down. Melky plays and other kids get in the mix.

That stinks.
Well, at least it happened now and not during the season. However, this is evidence of why Bernie should have come down to FL.
Guess Melky gets some serious playing time now.
Think Bernie wishes he was at camp now?
Kevin Thompson can be a very dependable 4th outfielder during Bobby’s healing. He can field each outfield position, run, throw, and was a good situational hitter last season in his limited chances.
If another outfielder is to make the club, he is a far better answer than Bernie.
Bernie was one of the greatest but his skills have sadly diminished, as happens to us all.
So much for that canard about how durable the Yankees’ OF is.
NoThanks to Kevin Thompson. Another Scrub…
I like Kevin Thompson. He proved better than Terrence Long.
I don’t know about Thompson either. Sure, he put up a 997 in AA (as a 25 yr old, though), but his numbers as a 26 yr old in Columbus were pretty bad (264/345/428).
Kevin Thompson is not someone I’d get excited about. He’s a career minor leaguer with no options. Bernie, altho old, is a proven hitter. We’re talking about backup here, but still, I’d rather have Bernie than Thompson.
Anyone is better than Terrence Long.
who isn’t better than terrance long?
The Bernie in 2007 isn’t.
You don’t get “excited” about Kevin Thompson, but he is a useful piece in that he’s cheap, fast, a good defender, and handles the bat well enough that you’re not embarrassed to put him in the lineup. He’s certainly not a world breaker, but he belongs on this team before Bernie does.
Hardly a fair sample but here it is:
Kevin Thompson

KT is mediocrity at it’s best. Plus you’re not talking about the intangibles that Bernie brings to the clubhouse. If it were up to me, I’d take Bernie over KT.
bernie can’t play the field anymore, which i think is one of the main functions of a 4th outfielder
Kevin Thompson is a nice 5th outfielder. He’s no Bubba though, LOL.
Humberto is going for an MRI now
Your list of statistics was stupid and proved nothing. The Yankees have enough ‘leaders’ with ‘intangibles’ in the clubhouse that they can afford to sacrifice Bernie’s terrible tangibles for the production that KT would bring off the bench.
Melky is the fourth outfielder. KT would be the 5th.
Like I said, not much of a list because KT had all of 30 at bats last year. Real reliable. Given that he had all of 19 games, I don’t know how you know what that great production KT would bring. Must be that chappy milk you drink.
If Abreu is hurt, Melky becomes one of the 3 starters and KT becomes the 4th OF. Either way, he won’t get much playing time, but at least he can field his position/pinch run.
What intangibles, exactly, does Bernie bring to the lockerroom?
Ask Jeter, Posada, and Mo. They can tell you better than I (they’re the ones who spoke about them in articles about Bernie) and I doubt they would lie.
I thought that Jeter provided the intangibles. I think Bernie brings that mix of classy-ness and veteranitude. What are we running here a baseball team or a corporate leadership seminar?
I love Bernie, but it’s time to move on from Bernie.
“Yankees outfielder Bobby Abreu strained his oblique in batting practice on Monday and is expected to be shut down from all baseball related activities for a few weeks, according to Newsday. The Yankees sent him for more tests and it is believed that his status for Opening Day could be in jeopardy.”
Does Newsday know something Torre doesn’t, or are they just guessing?
Oblique muscle strains are very difficult to get over. He’s not going to be able to swing the bat for a while, so he’s definitely going to be behind.
Although the geezers in our outfield have been durable in the past, at their respective ages you can bank on, at best, having a few of these 2 week injuries during the year and at worst having one of them and Giambi miss siginificant time.
It think its crazy going into the season with only four legitimate outfielders (forget Thompson and Reese) on the 40 man roster, and if it were me I’d carry a 5th outfielder (if not Bernie, an Aaron Guiel type) on the 25 man over a 7th relief pitcher who will never, ever play.
For the handful of times that the bullpen is burned out during the year, you’re better off concocting an “injury” and calling a guy up from AAA who’s been playing regularly than throwing a guy who’s been rotting in the major league pen for weeks without regular use.
Baseball at a minor league level does count, you know. Kevin Thompson has put up a line of .275/.367/.436 in close to 3000 minor league PAs, which — when you factor in outfield defense and speed, which you have ignored — makes him a versatile, probably above replacement level player for the Yankees bench. And how much ‘leadership’ does the Yankee clubhouse need? So much that you’re willing to sacrifice the number of runs the Yankees score in real games?
look Bernie simply can’t play defense anymore. his range LAST YEAR was nothing. his arm is nothing. his speed has seriously declined, and he was never a great baserunner, and now consider that he;s a year older! his strengths were his glove (not anymore, due to age), and his bat which is still good, but only against LHP.
I’d rather have KT be the 5th OF. he can fly (pinch-runner), he can play all 3 OF positions, and could probably hit .270. Bernie can’t do 2 of those, and considering KT is younger & cheaper, it should be an easy decision.
anyone upset now that we didn’t trade Melky for Gonzalez? Abreu might not miss any time, but you know what i mean…
“So much for that canard about how durable the Yankees’ OF is.”
who said that Rich? Maybe you’re just starting to watch baseball this year but last I checked… we were missing our 2 corners last year due to injury (Sheff and Matsui) Then there was Damon who missed time with his shoulder tendonitis and the broken bone in his foot…. Seriously… do you watch baseball?
Injuries happen folks. Its spring training so let’s try and keep the doomsday scenarios to a minimum.
Most good ML hitters need 20 AB’s in games and they are ready for the season. Even if he misses 3 weeks, he can get enough AB’s to be ready for the start of the season.
That’s why Melky is here and that’s why they didn’t trade him. He will get plenty of AB’s this season in the OF rotation and in the long run, it will keep everyone fresh.
Well, if the Braves weren’t asking for Proctor, they would’ve traded Melky for Gonzalez.
