Well, if the Braves weren't asking for Proctor, they would've traded Melky for Gonzalez.

Injuries happen folks. Its spring training so let's try and keep the doomsday scenarios to a minimum.

Most good ML hitters need 20 AB's in games and they are ready for the season. Even if he misses 3 weeks, he can get enough AB's to be ready for the start of the season.

That's why Melky is here and that's why they didn't trade him. He will get plenty of AB's this season in the OF rotation and in the long run, it will keep everyone fresh.

"So much for that canard about how durable the Yankees’ OF is."
who said that Rich? Maybe you're just starting to watch baseball this year but last I checked... we were missing our 2 corners last year due to injury (Sheff and Matsui) Then there was Damon who missed time with his shoulder tendonitis and the broken bone in his foot.... Seriously... do you watch baseball?

look Bernie simply can't play defense anymore. his range LAST YEAR was nothing. his arm is nothing. his speed has seriously declined, and he was never a great baserunner, and now consider that he;s a year older! his strengths were his glove (not anymore, due to age), and his bat which is still good, but only against LHP.

I'd rather have KT be the 5th OF. he can fly (pinch-runner), he can play all 3 OF positions, and could probably hit .270. Bernie can't do 2 of those, and considering KT is younger & cheaper, it should be an easy decision.

anyone upset now that we didn't trade Melky for Gonzalez? Abreu might not miss any time, but you know what i mean...

Baseball at a minor league level does count, you know. Kevin Thompson has put up a line of .275/.367/.436 in close to 3000 minor league PAs, which -- when you factor in outfield defense and speed, which you have ignored -- makes him a versatile, probably above replacement level player for the Yankees bench. And how much 'leadership' does the Yankee clubhouse need? So much that you're willing to sacrifice the number of runs the Yankees score in real games?

Although the geezers in our outfield have been durable in the past, at their respective ages you can bank on, at best, having a few of these 2 week injuries during the year and at worst having one of them and Giambi miss siginificant time.

It think its crazy going into the season with only four legitimate outfielders (forget Thompson and Reese) on the 40 man roster, and if it were me I'd carry a 5th outfielder (if not Bernie, an Aaron Guiel type) on the 25 man over a 7th relief pitcher who will never, ever play.

For the handful of times that the bullpen is burned out during the year, you're better off concocting an "injury" and calling a guy up from AAA who's been playing regularly than throwing a guy who's been rotting in the major league pen for weeks without regular use.

Oblique muscle strains are very difficult to get over. He's not going to be able to swing the bat for a while, so he's definitely going to be behind.

"Yankees outfielder Bobby Abreu strained his oblique in batting practice on Monday and is expected to be shut down from all baseball related activities for a few weeks, according to Newsday. The Yankees sent him for more tests and it is believed that his status for Opening Day could be in jeopardy."
