“Everything is great. I’m just the fortunate that the little personal matter that I had to take care of was in February and not in June or July or any time during the season. I’m very grateful the Yankees gave me a couple of days to go about it.”

Asked what had happened, Damon wasn’t specific.

“I’d like that part to be private. … I am a better stronger person today and I believe those two days were key to me. It’s time to get ready to play baseball.”

Here’s the audio clip as well:

    Go Damon!

  2. Ryan

    John Henry is a dolt.

“Roush Fenway Racing owner gives MLB player a…Toyota: [Boston Red Sox slugger David] Ortiz got his own present Wednesday morning. Arriving at the Red Sox minor league facility for his physical, Ortiz was greeted with a Toyota Tundra pickup, courtesy of owner John W. Henry……why is this of interest? Red Sox owner John Henry is Jack Roush’s new partner at Roush-Fenway Racing, they run Ford Fusion’s and Jack Roush has spoken out against Toyota’s involvement in NASCAR…..oops.”

  3. DesignatedBlogger

I’m glad everything is OK with Damon. He sounds good to go.
What was going on in the background, though? Sounds like someone getting whipped? Pavano?

  4. Rich

It’s none of our business, but I think he’s sort of not telling the truth.

  5. TurnTwo

another reported speculated it had to do with his elderly father, who has had some health issues, and lives just up the road in Orlando. not saying i have any inside info or anything like that, just read that somewhere.

  6. Alex

    From today’s Boston Globe:
“Jason Varitek tried out a pair of infrared contact lenses, but only because they might help him with contrast in colors, especially in Fenway Park shadows.”

Huh?! Could any opthamologists on this blog explain this to me?

Could this explain his .238 BA or maybe he just sucks?

  7. 23and2

RE: Ryan’s post about John Henry’s gift to Ortiz
RE: Alex’s post about Jason Varitek

And that exactly what to do with Damon?

  8. Colin

Alex, that sounds similar to the contacts Brian Roberts wore when he had that awesome start to the ‘05 season

  9. Jeremy

He had a personal matter to settle alright. It involved A.J. Pierzynski, thumbtacks, and a steel cage.

  10. Fernando Alejandro

It has everything to do with Damon since many beleive he moonlights as an infrared contact lense salesman and has many clients on major league teams. It could be the reason for his two days off.

  11. sammy

anybody read the Kepner story on Colter Bean?
interesting. I had no idea he had played that many games in Columbus.

(Peter, I hope you don’t mind me referring to a Times story. Not sure how you feel about “competitors,” but I know you were open enough to refer other blogs… so I felt it was okay to refer to it here.)

I know that Bean’s got somewhat of a cult status among us here… at least, he did. Prior to spring training starting.

  12. Pat

while I odn’t know if they’re the same thing that “The Heart and Soul” of the Sux is using, I do know there are amber tinted contact lenses that are used to remove contrasts in lighting. They kinda bring everything into sync.

  13. Flipper

    Pete-

WFAN is reporting that Bobby Abreu is out for a “couple of weeks” with a strained oblique muscle, do you know anything abou this?

  14. mel

Some of the UH baseball players are using the red contact lenses so they can pick up the seams on ball better when they’re batting.

  15. J.Romeo

    Asian legends

Espn didn’t mention Igawa. I guess There’s no Love for Iron Beaver. Wang’s and Matsuzaka were both mention as Legends of the game who came from Asia.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/asia/index

Interesting that First MLB player from China was 1stbaseman named Harry Kingman of New York Yankees.

“I am a better stronger person today and I believe those two days were key to me.”

Doesn’t sound physical. Maybe a religious experience, therapy, or a seminar (or gasp! rehab). Whatever it was he needed to get it done and he can concentrate on the season. Best wishes.

    Hilarious article:

  18. Chappy

It was a two day bender and peyote spiritual quest. He got it all out of his system now so it wouldn’t come up during the season.

  19. Chappy

Actually, I know what happened. He heard Pete talking with Jim Baumbach about The Departed and got the hell out of Tampa before Pete ruined the ending for him.

  20. Harold O

Welcome Back Bernie. I hope Yankees make a call to Bernie’s. Praise the Lord, I thank you

  21. TurnTwo

confirmation on Abreu… questionable return in time for Opening Day; guess Melky will get his ABs after all?

  22. Chappy

Correction: Bernie will get Melky’s ABs.

  23. sunny615

Not if Cashman has his say. No guarantees so no Bernie.

  24. fran j

not his father, he said so… only one person he didn’t mention there. I think he went and got Manny for the Sox, thanks, man.

They best get Bernie. Damon is not going to last the season.
