Joe Torre audio from today

Peter Abraham
February
26

In this session, Joe talks about Carl Pavano, his pitching rotation, Bobby Abreu’s injury and the impending arrival of one Lawrence Peter Berra. Listen to the end, it’s pretty funny.

Thanks for posting the audio links, Peter. It is great to be able to listen to them.

Couple of things I picked up on:

Firstly why would Joe say dont ask him the why about the rotation over the next few days. I mean I can understand that he may not want to committ to anything this early but to me at least it seems to be the rotation that has been bandied about for months.

Second, I still feel badly that bernie has not had the common courtsey to call Joe back. It is not like they dont have a long term relationship.

Finally, Happy that Yogi is on his way, we can only assume that Guidry will be waiting at baggage claim for him with a sign.

I thought his comments about Posada “making a friend” seemed strange… wasn’t Jeter best man at his wedding..? Torre made him out to be a sad guy with no friends, very odd.

Thanks for the audio again. I am starting to love this blog. Here is much better than the blog over at MVN. I really can’t stand those idiots and their senseless comments over there.

    Chris-

I took the POsada comments re a friend to be more on a catching level someone he could talk to and trusted to deal with the everyday grinds of catching etc. I got the feeling that maybe since Giradi left he didnt have that relationship with a coach or any of the backups.

Could Joe have simply meant Posada now has a mentor? I think it must be difficult in these interviews to sometimes come up with just the right words to describe a situation. Jeter can’t help Posada with his catching, no matter how good a friend he is. And from the gist of what Joe was saying, I figured he meant Jorge now has someone he can lean on with regard to his catching duties. They’ve never had a coach like Pena before, I gather.

I sure hope Abreu’s injury isn’t serious, and I know this means more playing time initially for Melky, but doesn’t it spoil the game play of trying to get Melky used to playing all the fields and coming in as a DH (pinch hitter). Pete, can you ask Joe if he still plans on using Melky the same way during spring training as they had planned before Abreu got hurt?

Joe is talking about Tony Pena being a mentor to Posada

Chris NY…catchers rarely see position players early on in ST…maybe all he meant was in the “pitchers/ catchers” group.

Gayle, I agree that Bernie should at least return Joe’s calls. It makes it look like Bernie is sitting at home pouting. It is so unfortunate that this is happening. Bernie was such an unselfish player in his career. It is tough to watch this. Paulie got a good sendoff. We said goodbye to Bernie but he came back another year. We never got a chance to say goodbye to Bernie last year. Now this. The only good thing is that if Bernie doesn’t sign somewhere else, at least he had respectable numbers in his last year. But knowing he feels hurt is tough to swallow. Still, he should return phone calls.
