Pavano has a bone bruise

Peter Abraham

According to Brian Cashman, tests revealed that Carl Pavano has a bone bruise on his left foot. That’s all the information we have for now.

No word on how long he will be out. But history suggests 18 months or so.

Chance of rain here at Legends Field, so it’ll be a quick workout.

OMG! I did not see that coming.

  2. ChrisV82

Did Pavano catch whatever disease Ken Griffey Jr. had in the early part of the decade? I really want this guy to succeed, but he needs to wear goalie pads or something.

  3. Stormy

Man, you guys (meaning the NY media) are being so unfair to Pavano. The man got hit in the foot with a linedrive and has a bone bruise. But still everyone somehow makes it sounds like it’s his fault. Like he’s trying to hide from pitching. If it was any other pitcher, the only reaction would be concern — but since it’s Pavano it becomes a question of his integrity. I’m sure people will say he somehow “faked” this injury, too.

  4. jennifer

Great he’ll come back just in time to pitch well and get himself a new huge contract. LOL

seriously anyone know how long it SHOULD take to come back from a bone bruise?

  5. Matt

This seems a lot like a “boy who cried wolf” story Stormy. If you don’t want people to give you crap for being injured, try to tough it out (unlike last season). If Johnny Damon gets a bone bruise and has to sit out a little bit, I bet everyone would give him a break, since he played with a bum foot most of last season. Carl Pavano used up his “give him a break”s long ago.

It’s a funny statement and not AT ALL unfair. This man, Pavano, has created this perception with the fans, his own teammates and coaches. A bone bruise varies, but can take anywhere from days to possibly a couple of weeks, but it depends on how deep and what bone(s) it’s affecting. I am just hoping he doesn’t “milk” it for more than what it is.

Everyone needs to realize that if this happened to Moose or Pettitte or Wang, or Matsui, Damon or Jeter, we’d be much more receptive and believe in them as competitors and warriors, that they would come back just as SOON as they possibly could to compete again. Remember Damon’s broken bone in his foot? He ran around and played the OF with that! With Pavano, most believe he’ll stay away, as he doesn’t really have the drive or will to get out there and do his job. History has given us enough of that demonstration for us to see him in such a light. I certainly hope he finally proves to be different this season.

  8. logan

you can’t blame him for getting hit with the line drive, but you can blame him for being such a damn slow healer, as he has exhibited in years past.

i think he shared a drink with nick johnson and griffey jr recently.

  9. Fernando Alejandro

Pavano’s history doesn’t allow for him to get a break. Did anyone read that article about Pettite who was saying that his first season with the Astro’s he knew he needed surgery before his first game, but since he didn’t want to make it seem like he wasn’t committed he just took a shot before each start and pitched his game. His fastball was in the high 80’s at the beginning of the season. Finally, his last start against the Mets his fastball was in the high 70’s, and he pitched well! But he decided that he had pitched long enough with the injury, and went in for surgery. That kind of guy gets a break.

Being a man of science, I think the most likely explaination is that someone (Red Sox?) has put a voodoo curse on poor Carl.

  11. TurnTwo

jokes aside, we havent been given any additional info on when to expect his return… for all we know, he could tough this thing out, and be back on the field by the end of the week to see how it feels. lets hope so, because they need him in this rotation when camp breaks.

  12. logan

they need him to get better so that thye can ship his ass out

  13. SJ44

The smart thing for Pavano to do tomorrow is to pitch as scheduled. Even if its abbreviated, he has to give it a go.

Not so much to prove anything to the media or fans (like it or not, the media and fans don’t matter) but to his teammates.

THAT’S important. If he shows his teammates he actually is commited to the cause, it will make his comeback a helluva lot easier.

If he chooses to sit out tomorrow, what little respect he has in the clubhouse will dissipate quickly.

  14. Nick B.

I kinda agree but man if he gets hurt any worse I think fans in Tampa will be out for blood. I think if he misses any time, they should just give him away b/c he is running out of chances with the team & fans. I like him, but this guy has a combination of bad luck/no desire.

  15. David

When he got hit in the foot with a baseball, Pavono was pitching batting prctive without a protective screen. As I understand it, some of the other pitchers used the screen. Pavano’s auto accident last year came when he was driving too fast. I wonder if Pavano (consciously or unconsciously) looks to put himself into situations where he can be injured.

  16. TurnTwo

Pavano did not use the screen because he was afraid of screwing up his mechanics. and people speed.

he isnt a thrill seeker, just really unlucky.

  17. Sebastian Arias

Did you Know Carl pavano was Former Redsox? He’s stealing money from yankees. Trade this Bum already. I can’t take anymote

  18. Rich

I think the bigger danger is that he comes back too soon.

  19. Sam

    New Drama:

“Spring Training: Where Every Yankee Fan Freaks Out on the Latest and the Lamest Injury News”

They happen, and sometimes happen repeatedly to one person. Let’s be patient and see what the Yankees decide to do with Pavano, they have all the information they need. Bitching on a message board about it serves no purpose.

  20. Rich

What are these boards for if not to vent?

  21. Phil

I’m just getting over a bone bruise on my heal. I’ll be back at the gym Wednesday and that will make 2 weeks.

  22. Jeremy

I’m sad that this increases the odds that the Carltract will be a near-total waste of money. I’m happy that this increases the odds that Karstens/Rasner/Sanchez/??? cracks the rotation.

  23. mike rook

Its a brusied bone he will be back by weeks end. Lets not blow this out of proportion

  24. Stormy

Mike, when it comes to Pavano, EVERYone blows EVERYthing out of proportion. Just the way it goes.

Pavano has a bone bruise on his left foot, which means his push-off foot is injured — if a pitcher can’t push off the mound, he can’t pitch. He probably just needs a few days for the soreness to disappear and he’ll be back.

  25. rbj

I’m giving Pavano a pass here; it is a legit injury & pitchers need their feet to be healthy.

Having said that, if he’s out for the year due to injuries, he should retire in order to stop getting paid by the Yankees.

  26. Cleveland Mike

Let me get this straight. We want guys to play hurt–to show us that they’re “warriors” (you’d think that in a time of war that people would cease to apply battle metaphors to sport). But, if they do play hurt and perform at a lower level and thus hurt the team (and slow the healing process too), we reserve the right to call them idiots and morons. Got it.

  27. Master Wangkee

It’s a legitimate injury but also minor enough for a resilient athlete to play through. Do I think he’s really injured? Of course, but that doesn’t mean he should sit out the rest of spring training which is what will probably happen. I hope ices it, takes a couple days off and then mans up for once in his life.

  28. Fan27

All I’m saying on the subject is that if there is a thunder/lightening storm nearby I am NOT standing next to Pavano!

  29. TurnTwo

i just heard on the FAN that Pavano might be able to throw in the spring training game on Sunday.

  30. LC

How long will he be out?

  31. Dustin

I’d like to see the bruise, maybe its money green and reads LUNCH TICKET.

  32. Russell

Call me crazy but I think this injury was good for him. Now people can think/see that he is cursed rather than just trying to rob the Yankees. As for this injury though, its like im a kid waiting outside BestBuy for the PS3. The longer the wait, the crazier I get. I really wanna see this guy on the mound pitching so I hope he will be back right when they start in March and the games are televised. That gives him about a week, assuming he doesn’t pitch until the first couple ST games.

[...] And wouldn’t you know it, the Rajah of Rehab is at it again. This time, he was the unfortunate recipient of a line drive off the bat of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales during batting practice. While Brian Cashman says it’s just a bone bruise, LoHud’s Peter Abraham noted that bone bruises often take 18 months to heel (Just kidding). [...]

  34. Rudy

I dont understand some of these post’s yyou say you want him to pitch through the injury tough it out, but if my memory serves me correctly you persecuted him for not reporting his injury to his rib cage as he tried to play through that. Lets say hypothetically he comes back and does pitch hurt and hurts himself worse i bet you guys would be on him again, you guys just dont make sense. I can understand your frustrations with the guy but your arguments dont make much sense. Plus its spring training I rather him go out now and let this heal and play during the season. Lets all calm down and see what happens before we try to sell him down the river.

  35. Reflaxion

The problem with Pavano isn’t that the guy gets injured. You can’t fault him for that. It’s that he seems to take a few months longer on average than any other player with a similar injury would take to recover. It gets to the point where the injury becomes more of an excuse than a hindrance, and it’s ridiculous.
