Kei Igawa is Japanese for Cy Young

Print those playoff tickets. Kei Igawa allowed an infield single by Brett Gardner to start the intrasquad game then retired the next five batters he faced, four on grounders.

19 pitches, 14 strikes.

Meanwhile, Jeff Karstens is baffling the starters. Six up and six down.

I wonder how many fans read this, Peter, and are panicking right now.

    the joy of baseball.
the chaos that is the baseball fan.

Joe wanted to start him out slowly. This is a good confidence booster for Kei and also Jeff. He shut down a all star lineup so far. I”m impressed.

You all know how the Yankees are against rookies! :) Of course, Karstens is setting them down. Seriously, though, I liked Karstens when he came up last year.

I liked Jeff when he was called up last year, too. Frankly, I don’t understand why I’ve seen some people on message boards, etc. make negative remarks about him. I thought he did a commendable job.

I guess Karstens just doesn’t seem like he’d be a great pitcher. We still remember getting burned on other flashes in the pan like Chacon and Small. But maybe Karstens is different, I certainly hope he is because he’s probably going to be the first one called up to replace Pavano and keep the space warm for Hughes or Clemens after June.
