It may be safe to schedule “Phil Hughes Bobblehead Doll Day” in Scranton

Phil Hughes is scuffling. After walking two batters in the third, he allowed a double by Michael Cuddyer in the fourth then wild pitched him to third.

Hughes came back to strike out MVP Justin Morneau. But that gave him 33 pitches and Ron Guidry came out to get him.

Hughees needs to spend some time in Class AAA. If he were lights out in spring training, it would cause a problem Torre and Cashman don’t need.

huh. i guess maybe some people can hold off on dubbing him the next rocket for a little while.

it’s just one less-than-great outing, but hopefully this reminds people that there’s no such thing as a sure thing. the kid MIGHT not be god’s gift to baseball, after all.

I really don’t read anything into this. What is mildly concerning is he also pitched pretty poorly in the futures game. Maybe at this (VERY early) point in his career he wilts when he really tries to impress.

I agree, his stuff looked good but his control wasn’t sharp and it seemed like he was overthrowing quite a bit.

i’d like to ammend my post by saying that there is every indication that hughes will be very good major league pitcher. i just think that maybe it’s time for people to stop saying things like, “why try to sign clemens when we have hughes waiting,” or “hughes will be in the rotation by june…”

that stuff is, in my opinion, just ludicrous. the ONLY thing the kid has proven at the big league level – thus far – is that he still has a ways to go.

I think Hughes being lights out would present a very nice problem that 30 teams would like to have.

Id much rather him be lights out than scuffle.

Hughes always has adjustment issues when he moves up a little. I expect his first several starts in the majors to, quite frankly, suck. THEN he takes over.

Yep, that’s why I’d rather see him in the Majors sooner that later. Let him get comfortable in the Majors so he’s ready for the playoffs.

It seemed to me that hughes was starting to settle in whe nthey took him out because of pitch count. Is the YES Radar still screwed up?

  9. Aaronedge March 1st, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Yeah, I mean the first inning of the year says a lot about the readiness of a pitcher. I love this blog, Pete, but you’re being silly about Phil. He was on pitch counts for a large part of last year, especially toward the end and this was his first outing. There is still a very good chance that he could dominate the rest of spring.

That’s it. Phil Hughes is officially over. Those 33 pitches he threw in the first day of Spring Training in March will make me forget his awesome control and lights out numbers from last year. He’s a scrub. Let’s trade him. Or just release him.

  11. Deric March 1st, 2007 at 4:28 pm

Who is this stupid Benjamin Kabak? Could someone please kick him out? Red Sox fans are not welcomed here!

  12. Deric March 1st, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Okay. Maybe he was just joking.

  13. Stormy March 1st, 2007 at 4:44 pm

I guess twenty-year-old kids aren’t allowed to have their control be a little off in their first inning of the spring. I suppose people think Hughes wakes up firing laser-beam 96-mile-an-hour fastballs.

Clearly you guys read the first sentence of a book and, if it’s not up to your standards, slam it shut and throw it in the fireplace.

  14. Russell W March 1st, 2007 at 5:00 pm

Trade Phil Hughes now. We might be able to get a 25th round draft pick for him.

  15. Stacey March 1st, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Get rid of him. He sucks.

  16. Benjamin Kabak March 1st, 2007 at 5:27 pm

_Okay. Maybe he was just joking._

    You win this post.

Lord we’re going to take this kid’s temperature after every pitch, aren’t we.

  18. Rich March 1st, 2007 at 9:33 pm

I don’t think one outing is all that revealing. He was obviously rushing his delivery.

  19. Russell March 2nd, 2007 at 7:11 am

Good idea R.B. – can we get Phil Hughes’ temperature after his next session? You media guys should be required to carry around thermometers

  20. Kevin M. March 2nd, 2007 at 9:33 am

Pete, your a smart guy and have a great blog, but you really embarass yourself by saying that the kid is not ready for the bigs yet because his command was a bit off in his first inning of the Spring. Most of his pitches barely missed and he was getting squeezed pretty hard by the ump in his first inning. His biggest problem was a lack of command of the curveball. Oh, by the way, he also struck out the reigning AL MVP, but I guess that doesn’t count.
