Andy Phillips returns to camp

1B Andy Phillips returned to Tampa late Wednesday night and was at Legends Field at 6:45 a.m. working out.

Phillips was excused from camp last week when his mother Linda was involved in a serious car accident in Alabama. She has progressed well in her recovery and recently had surgery to repair a hip fracture.

“She’s not as alert as I would have liked to leave,” Phillips said. “But I felt comfortable where she was in improving and balancing that with knowing I needed to get back and get going.”

Phillips got emotional when talking about the support of his teammates.

“It’s been pretty overwhelming,” he said as he fought back tears. “To see guys reach out like that, because it’s been tough.”

It has been a tough two years for Phillips, whose wife overcame cancer in 2006. If you want somebody to root for, he’s your guy.
