Pavano scratched from tonight’s start

Peter Abraham
March

The Yankees just announced that Carl Pavano has left Legends Field within the last 30 minutes and has been excused from tonight’s start for “personal reasons.”

A team spokesman claimed there is nothing physically wrong with Pavano and that his absence does not involve a legal matter.

Joe Torre is expected to address the situation after the game but we have already been informed that little information will be forthcoming.

It remains to be seen how much impact this latest issue will have on Pavano’s status in the rotation. Obviously nobody knows what the situation is, so now is not the time to poke fun at Pavano.

But clearly, this is yet another setback in what has been a terrible tenure with the Yankees.

    April Fools?

  2. LCâ„¢

    Unbelievable.

  3. Phil

Whoa, he’s found another way to skip work!

  4. R.B.

It was announced today he was sued for that auto accident, no? I guess that’s the legal matter this has “nothing to do with”?

  5. Rich

If it does relate to the legal matter, it’s at times like this that he has to suck it up to show that he can be relied on.

  6. Doreen

C’mon guys. Ease up. Personal reasons could be anything, and the guy has been working hard this spring.

  7. Phil

on the other hand, maybe Cash traded him!

  8. Ant928

Not for nothing but for yet ANOTHER negative ROI involving Pavano for the Yankees Business and yet ANOTHER embarassment involving Pavano for the Yankees PR Machine I would not be surprised if the Yankees have effectively fired him and it’s Front Office making the decision to scratch him. I mean c’mon he hasn’t pitched in two years, is now being sued, and bascially looks like a schmuck. Steinbrenner likes the clean cut, shaven, short haired image, and an a**hole like this brings the organization down. King George won’t stand for it…which makes me think The Rajah of Rehab is out.

  9. Justin

He was sued for crashing his car. He’s not an a-hole. I can sue you right now for whatever I want, that’s how the legal system works.

  10. Jorge (México)

Agree with Doreen. Remember just some days ago Johnny Damon left the camp some days for personal reasons. Let’s wait to know what happened with Pavano before making a judgement.

  11. Jb

I was reading Jon Heyman Column that Pavano got lawsuit. Is this true Peter?

  12. Wolf In Pinstripes

Agreed with Doreen, verbatim. I’d hate to see people finding an excuse to crack more jokes and then really feel like crap for it later. Phillips and Damon have both already been out for personal reasons, so there’s no reason that Pavano can’t have something very legit going on that requires him to be scratched – he’s human too, behind all of the melodrama we’ve come to see him surrounded by. And before some wiseass wants to come in here and think they need to remind us all of what’s gone on with Carl since we signed him that makes him different from Johnny and Andy, save it – listening to broken records is a pain in the ass for the ears.

  13. Jeter for MVP

Any idea who is getting the start tonight now?

  14. Chris

Jorge, Damon is a completely different issue. The last couple of months last season Damon played with a broken bone in his foot. While Pavano missed about a month of the season due to a bruise on his butt. Different issues entirely. That’s why people hate on Pavano and not Damon. Even if they have the same personal reasons for missing a game. Pavano continues to find ways to not make his starts while Damon seems to be doing everything in his power to play every inning of every game.

  15. Wolf In Pinstripes

Yes Chris, thanks for stating the obvious. I knew somebody wouldn’t be able to resist.

  16. LCâ„¢

Karstens is filling in for Pavano.

  17. Rich

Damon has a reservoir of good will. Pavano, not so much.

  18. Nick B.

Yo relax until you know the details, I am sure he’s not skipping it to get a manicure. Something bad could have happened to a family member and family comes before baseball even if you guys don’t think so. Just relax, its a spring training start and it could be a very good reason. He doesn’t deserve a break but until details come out ya have to give him one.

I’ll wait to rip Pavano later. If it’s legit, the it’ll keep. If not, then ripping him later will be just as fun. But for now, history or not, I don’t throw stones.

  21. Pavano Update: Will not make tonight’s start « Made In 1903

[...] Pavano Update: Will not make tonight’s start According to Peter Abraham at his Lohud Blog Pavano will not make his scheduled start tonight for “personal reasons”. Team officials say it’s nothing physical but that Joe Torre will comment about it after the game. This is purely speculation but: perhaps a trade is on the horizon? If that’s the case, good riddance Carl. [...]

  22. Scooter

This speculation is a bit reckless. We do NOT know what’s wrong – maybe we should hold back til Joe talks to the media after the game.

  23. Mike

Seriously, everyone chill until we know what’s up. If God-forbid someone in his family is in a bad spot, alot of people are going to feel like **** later. As much as he hasn’t earned it, give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

  24. MY BASEBALL BIAS - AN AL EAST BIAS WEBLOG » Pavano To Miss Tonight’s Start

[...] Pavano To Miss Tonight’s Start By JMM Carl Pavano will not pitch against the Devil Rays tonight reports Peter Abraham – The Yankees just announced that Carl Pavano has left Legends Field within the last 30 minutes and has been excused from tonight’s start for “personal reasons.â€? [...]

  25. Paulâ„¢

Thw whole answer here could lie with Dietmar Falsch, aka Donald Babcock.

  26. Andrew

That’d be pretty sweet if he was traded. Don’t care for who, honestly right now I’d rather have Karstens/Rasner.

  27. LCâ„¢

2 innings, 2 K’s, and 2 hits so far for Karstens.

  28. ryan

I’ll wait to pass judgement on this incident but most Yankee fans will not.

  29. Rich

I’ll reserve judgment, but not jokes.

  30. LCâ„¢

    Anyone listening to the game?

  31. Chris

Wolf In Pinstripes, you act like I was hating on Pavano. I was just stating that comparing Pavano to Damon is just rediculous. I really don’t understand what your love affair with Pavano is all about though. It’s seriously not that big of a deal.

  32. Wolf In Pinstripes

Chris, come on – “love affair with Pavano”? Don’t go there.

  33. 22 4 Eva

I heard he got traded for Miggy Cabrera.
