Update on Carl Pavano

Peter Abraham
March
9

Brian Cashman just spoke to reporters. Here is what he said on Carl Pavano:

“He’s got a legitimate reason. Joe Torre told him to go take care of it. When he returns, to the degree he wants to, he can address it or not. He doesn’t have to. There’s somewhere he should be right now and that’s where he’s at.

“The important thing is to know that he really doesn’t need to be here tonight. It’s something that came up right before game time. Joe said to let him go and rightfully so. He’ll return here soon and it’s not an issue.”

It would be irresponsible to speculate on what happened. But this certainly does seem legit. Cashman indicated that Pavano would return soon.

Meanwhile the Yankees are up 4-0 with Jeff Karstens on the mound.

All right, well I hope everything is OK with him.

  2. ACultOfOne

If this were a regular season game, could he have stayed?

  3. ??

Acultofone, can you read?……He doesnt know what is wrong he just stated the reason is legit.

  4. jay destro

ya know when johnny did this, we all were surprised and worried… family? health? etc?

when pavano does this, we are just plain out used to it.

i hope phil is getting ready for june.

  5. SJ44

My guess. Its involving the lawsuit filed against him (and the Yankees) yesterday by the guy he was involved in the accident last year.

  6. Jeter for MVP

jay, I hope Karstens is ready for April.

I do hope everything is ok with Pavano and his family.

  8. LCâ„¢

I dont know if Karstens is still pitching, but if he is, he seems to have done a good job(3IP,2H,0R).

  9. Mike

He knew about the lawsuit at least all day. He wouldn’t have come to the park if it had something to do with that. A personal emergency came up, and he’s taking care of it. I truly believe this guy wants to come back more than anyone, so I think you have to believe that if Joe says it’s OK, it’s a decent reason.

  10. jay destro

hey everyone, ill be in tampa as of tomorrow… ill try taking some pics and will add a link on a reply.

  11. Peter Abraham

This has nothing to do with a lawsuit that was filed two months ago. He received a call before the game involving some matter he had to attend to. I will not guess what that could be but Joe Torre told him to skip the game and deal with it.

  12. Stacey

Well I hope everything is okay.

  13. steve

“…to the degree he wants to (return to ST)”

Hmmm. I don’t know what to make of that. I hope that Pavano isn’t having to deal with some horrible family tragedy. If that’s the case, he has my deepest sympathies.
But Cashman’s words are a bit of a mystery.
By the way, I can’t imagine this has anything to do with the lawsuit. It’s Friday evening. The attorneys have all gone home for the weekend. . .

  14. R.B.

â€?…to the degree he wants to (return to ST)â€?

    Steve —

That’s not what Cashman said. “to the degree he wants to” refers to whether Pavano wants to talk about the personal matter, not to how much he wants to return.

  15. LCâ„¢

Chase Wright K’d the side in the 4th. Other than that, I have no idea what’s going on.

  16. Basura

    steve,

That’s a strange interpretation (and parsing) of what Peter wrote.

Cashman said Pavano can address it if and when he wants to.

Your use of parentheses (that aren’t in the body of the report) make it seem you’re questioning whether Pavano wants to return to spring training.

Why not just put some elipses in and make up whatever story you want?

  17. kasey

i hope his family’s okay and everything, but pavano hasn’t really earned the benefit of the doubt in these matters.

  18. SJ44

For whatever reason, he isn’t pitching again.

At this point, I could care less if he shows up again or not. If its a serious family issue, my sympathy is with him and his family. But, the fact is, this guy hasn’t been able to pitch since June of 2005.

Whether its bad karma, or he just doesn’t want to pitch for the Yankees, its time to move on. Karstans can handle the #4 spot in the rotation and Igawa (at least for now) can be the fifth starter. At least those guys show up. That’s half the battle.

Send the guy home, let him take care of whatever he has to take care of this time and move on without him. He just isn’t worth the trouble anymore.

  19. Rich

    /jokes

  20. li

I agree with Kasey especially considering Pavano admitted he wasn’t giving it his all these past two years. Hopefully, the issue isn’t anything more serious then having to meet with people to set up the move to whatever city he has been traded to. Plus if Torre says he’ll be back soon how serious can it be?

  21. Emobacca

Allysa Milano has agreed to hook up with him again? Thats a good reason to skip the game imo

  22. steve

    Basura–

    maybe I misinterpreted Cashman’s comments. and maybe i didn’t.
i made a literal reading of his comments. i didn’t make up anything.

  23. Rich

Milano would “hook up” with anything with a pulse.

    STOP THE PRESSES!!

    Mientkiewicz got a hit!

    No longer 0 for Spring.

    YAAAAAY!

  26. Josh

rotoworld says that cashman told reporters that theres a ‘non-personal’ health related issue he had to deal with.

sounds like someone in his family may have gotten some terrible news :(

  27. Brian

    Steve,

You can’t return to ST “to a degree.” You either return, or you don’t. As a result, the phrase “to a degree” must mean the extent to which he wants to discuss the reason for his absence.

  28. Jb

Congratulations. Doug Mienstinks still bating .077 this spring.

  29. LCâ„¢

Damn, the Rays K’d 15 times today.

  30. jonathan

I hope that Pavano and his family are truly ok, but i want him banished from ever wearing a yankee uniform again.Ship him to St Louis, or siberia, where he can spend the rest of his days.

  31. LCâ„¢

I just read the AP report and apparently Pavano didnt ask permission to leave, Torre told him to go.

  32. Eric

I think he needs to go – I now this is not an injury thing and I hope things work out okay ofr him and his family but it would be best for him to be traded.

  33. Andy Hawkins' Ghost

Bottom line is that the Yanks need Pavano to come back and contribute. It would be to EVERYBODY’s benefit. Continuing to ridicule him serves nobody’s interests. If Carl can pitch decently this year (10-12 wins and 150+ innings) we are set. If not, we are in touchy waters. I’m on the Hughes train like everybody else but I really don’t want to rush him and risk a Prior-esque early breakdown. Carl, when healthy (yeah, I know) is a proven MLB pitcher. Let TRY to be suportive here. After all, it only March 9th!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Peter Abraham

Don’t get too caught up in that report on Clemens. I was standing outside the suite when he went in. He was in there with George for 2:30 tops and Cashman was not present. There wasn’t time to negotiate any deals.

  35. Jake

The Rays really understand the patience hitting approach.

  36. ChrisV82

Does anyone know what the Rays are going to do with their outfield? Is Gomes going to have a spot?

Also, shame about Pavano. Guy can’t even deal with personal business anymore without being criticized.

  37. Proctor'sLimpLimb

Team sources say Pavano may have to testify in Tampa later this month in a hearing over his non-payment of the commission on his $39.95 million Yankees deal. The commission should amount to close to $2 million, assuming the standard agents’ fee of five percent. Get a load of this. Apparently, Pavano’s contention is the agent should have gotten at least $40 million, not just a mere $39.95 million (for a lifetime losing pitcher, no less). So Pavano is handling it by paying nothing.

  38. Vermilion

He left because he’s being sued by the other person involved in the wreck he was in last year.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns

  39. Ronaldo

Meh, I don’t know what the heck is up with this guy. If its something personal, then yeah go ahead and take care of it, but really, is anyone suprised? Its always one thing or another with him.

But boy, Pavano really took care of A-Rod, man, A-rod must feel left out of the media, thanks to Pavano.

  40. hmmm

no one here has any idea what the issue is, so why is pavano being criticized? criticize him all you want for last year, i don’t really like the guy either, but why is this “the straw that broke the camel’s back?” what if someone in his family died? no one has any idea, so let’s cut the guy some slack until we do.

  41. NJYanks

A friend of mine is working spring training and he said he heard it might be due to his wife’s miscarriage. Pure speculation but also heresay from Tampa

  42. Annie Savoy

To: NJYanks -Pavano is not married.

Carl Pavano has too much personal baggage to be a member of this team.

  43. sunny615

According to the Post, “Pavano split to attend to a health situation involving his girlfriend, 22-year-old Gia Allemand.” If that’s the case, I think he deserves some slack. Andy Phillips had two years of personal issues – should he be cut too?

  44. ynottony

I heard it’s to go tend to his PREGNANT honey, GIA …
    he he he

  45. Thurman

Yeah, if it’s girlfriend-related he gets a break from me. In fact, I’m reading Pavano right now as a guy who can’t catch a break. He works his butt off all winter trying to get in better condition so he can come back and pitch for the Yankees, then takes a line drive off his heel and then his girlfriend has a medical issue, and we all jump all over him. Let’s give it until the end of March, take his entire spring into perspective, and then we can prasie him or trash him accorndingly.

  46. hmmm

“Carl Pavano has too much personal baggage to be a member of this team.”

say who? you? i don’t like pavano either, but that’s a dumb thing to say. does andy phillips have “too much baggage”? after all, his wife was sick, he was on the DL last year, and his mother was in a car accident.

if his girlfriend had a miscarraige or something like that, who are you to begrudge him missing a SPRING TRAINING start?

  47. Angry Bear

Bottom line is we need Pavano healthy and succesfull because A: It makes him tradeable and maybe we get a decent back-up catcher or firstbaseman for him or B: He becomes the league average #4 starter we thought we were getting. Either way it helps the team. My preference is a solid spring, trade him, and open his rotation spot for 1 of the kids.
