Carl Pavano missed his start last night. But the Yankees said it was for a legitimate reason.

This blog has poked fun at Pavano in the past. But trust us on this one, he was justified. The team expects him back as early as today.

Thank you for reporting this the way you have.

According to the NY Post, Pavano left to attend to something involving his girlfriend and it was serious:

“Pavano split to attend to a health situation involving his girlfriend, 22-year-old Gia Allemand. Earlier in spring training, Pavano was asked if Allemand was pregnant, and he politely refused to talk about his personal life.”

I heard it’s to go tend to his PREGNANT honey, GIA …
    he he he

Peter, what’s the plan as far as getting Pavano back to pitching? Will he throw a bullpen today and go back to his normal spot in the rotation, or will they make him get into a game before then?

22 year old? oh yeah Pav Dogg

  6. Stormy March 10th, 2007 at 9:55 am

And by the way, ynottony, if it’s true that he had to attend a “serious heath situation” because of his pregnant girlfriend, it leads to the logical conclusion that she miscarried, so I hardly think the “he he he” is appropriate.

Whatever I think of Pavano as a player, if he or someone in his family is ill, I wish him only the best. You have to remember that these guys are people too. Did you not wish Andy Phillips the best because he’s not that good of a hitter? C’mon guys.

I hope everything is okay with Carl and whatever his situation is. I’m sorry to hear that its serious. As a person he deserves compassion.

Really in this situation, if you can’t resist laughing or having a joke at his expense, its probably best to sit on your hands and just not post anything at all.

What nobody is talking about here is the job Karstens did filling in- three scoreless innings of work. I think this guy needs to get a spot in the rotation. He’s pitching well time and time again against big league hitters (even if it was just the D-Rays). In my mind, he’s earned it more than Pavano or Igawa.

  10. Thurman March 10th, 2007 at 10:57 am

Karstens right now is looking like the all-important #6 starter in the Ramiro Mendoza mold, and Torre needs a guy like that in the ‘pen. He fills in for a starter who goes on the 15-day or 21-day for a blister or a sore toe, and he tosses 3 or 4 innings when a starter gets rocked in the 3rd inning. Very valuable member of the 12-man staff….

    Anthony
the drays have hitting it is pitching they are missing. So don’t put down the fact that he pitched only against the drays.

    Stormy
If that was the case he shouldn’t think twice about leaving, that is a serious medical situation. He doesn’t get the benefit of doubt anymore because he hasn’t pitched for us in almost 2 years and there is always something with him. Any other player gets the benefit of doubt becasue they’ve all been here playing.

Whether its Karstens, Rasner, Sanchez, Ohlendorf, Clippard, etc. the Yanks have to start thinking about creating spots on the roster for these guys-this year or next. They’re ready and they’re good. The AAA rotation might be better than the big club’s.

  13. Angry Bear March 10th, 2007 at 11:34 am

By the way, I didn’t mention Hughes because he’s automatic. I would expect him by June with someone getting moved to the pen or out to make room for him. The Yanks future is these young arms. That future should start this season.

  14. Jamie March 10th, 2007 at 11:42 am

With all these young arms right on the verge of making the big league squad, it boggles my mind why the yankees signed igawa for 5 years

    Jamie -
Because you can never have too much pitching. Very seldom does the starting rotation out of spring training make every start. One or more invariably miss one or more starts. That’s when depth comes into play. It appears that Cashman is trying create a deep staff comprised of many young arms. One or more of them should pan out, no?

I am very proud of Carl and Gia for getting through a scare with their pregnancy and he is pitching amazing. CHildren are a blessing and this is one blessing Carl needed to get back on his feet.

  17. D. Simmons March 28th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

Carl and Gia are no longer together, engaged or pregnant. That would be the reason for his returned focus to baseball.

Do we commend 22 year old gold diggers now? Here’s the lowdown, a no name aspiring model is envolved in an accident with a Yankee on the DL just ready to make a comeback, she leverages the accident by speaking out tin the media, she gets plastic surgery to enhance her looks (lips, nose, breasts), has greater success in her modeling pursuits, she gets pregnant, then gets engaged to a Yankee, she continues to enter contests including a “Maxxim Hometown Hottie” contest, which she lists her “status” as single, and she excepts and offer from Penthouse to pose nude if only she’s able to cover her nipples with her hair… Does this sound like a woman we’re going to give credit for getting Carl off the DL and on the mound? I’m surprised he wasn’t institutionalized from this lowlife from Howard Beach.

He’s now focused on what he should be focused on because of his smarts to get out of a terminally bad situation. The credit goes to him, and his agent I’m sure. Give him the ball and let him earn that paycheck.
