Pavano pitches three solid innings

Carl Pavano’s line: 3 4 2 2 1 2. He tossed 48 pitches, 29 for strikes.

He retired the first five Boston batters in order on 16 pitches. That included a strikeout of Manny Ramirez, who has red hair this year.

With two outs in the second inning, Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp had singles before Doug Mirabelli cracked a two-run double down the line in right field.

Pavano recovered and didn’t allow another run. With two on and two out in the third inning, he struck out J.D. Drew looking. Pavano left the game with the Yankees leading 3-2.

Tim Wakefield allowed four runs in eight hits in four innings. Every Yankee starter other than Melky Cabrera has a hit or an RBI.
