Cuts made after loss

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 13, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Infielder Eric Duncan, outfielder Brett Gardner, infielder Alberto Gonzalez, right-hander Steven Jackson, right-hander Jeff Kennard, first baseman Juan Miranda, outfielder Jose Tabata and right-hander Kevin Whelan were assigned to the minor-league camp.

Phil Hughes will hang around an extra day so he can throw a bullpen with Ron Guidry watching. The same is probably true of Humberto Sanchez.

Tabata, the team’s top offensive prospect, was 6 of 13 with a homer and two RBI in nine games.

Pete is there a reason why Guidry could not watch him throw the bullpen even if he had been sent down. It’ s not like he has to travel far to see him throw a bullpen, it’s across the street.

Glad to hear Chris Basak made it a little longer. Don’t think there’s much chance of him displacing Cairo as utility infielder (wishful thinking), but he’s shown to be a good pickup from the Mets farm system. Basak looks really good offensively and defensively at 2nd, SS and 3rd.

    So Cal Yankees Fan

good to see tabata putting up some good numbers … hes what 18? 19 ? can’t wait to see him in action this year, u think he’ll start in AA or high A ?

Are they crazy sending down Jeff Kennard? Wasn’t he suspossed to be a long reliever, or at least a spot starter? Couln’t that allowed him to say around a little more, and aren’t there other players who haven’t had a great ST that deserve to be sent down, aka Britton and/or Ohlendorf and/or Rasner. I think this will be a mistake, but he will eventually come back up, after Pavano gets injured again.

Gayle: Kid gets another day of good food, a big locker and the nice bullpen. Plus, yes, Guidry doesn’t want to shag over across the street.

Alex your confusing Kartens with Kennard.

Tabata is 18. Born in August of 1988. He will probably start at Tampa (High A).

Alex: I think Jay is right about your confusion, and BTW, Rasner has had a pretty good ST.

[...] Via Pete Abraham, the following prospects were cut and sent across the street to minor league camp (I added their stats): [...]

They sent down Derek Jatter??? But he was supposed to play SS!

They sent down Alberto Gonzalez? He was supposed to be our attorney general (although maybe not for much longer). If only the US government could send him down to the minors.

Did Tabata’s performance this year show any signs we’ll see him in the bigs sometime next year (or dare I say even as a September call-up?) or is he still a couple years away?

Interesting posts….maybe Peter can enlighten us on the comment about better food and bigger lockers.

I once read that the Yankees are the one organization in all of baseball that didn’t skimp on minor league expenses. The idea (I think it was called the “Yankee Way”) was to make sure the minor leaguers had fresh uniforms, and no hand-me-downs with stitches and patches. They also used new baseballs every day, and all the foul lines were perfect and fresh and straight. The intention was to let the kids know that being in the Yankees organization was first class from top to bottom.

That would tell me, if true, that the food and the lockers at minor league camp are not so bad, right….?
