WFAN’s Mike and the Mad Dog are here today. For those of you who don’t know, they are AM radio hosts on a huge New York station. Their show is also carried by the YES Network.
I’ll admit to being conflicted about them.
They can be compelling radio at times, actually most of the time. I listen every day when I’m in New York and nobody in their business does better interviews. They also can be hilarious.
But when they come here, they do their show in one of the radio booths in the press box and never see any of the players face to face.
The players are led out into the hallway near the clubhouse to sit in a chair and face a television camera and microphone. Mike and Chris remain in their booth. Why do they come to Florida in the first place?
Would it kill them to go down to the clubhouse and shake a few hands? I don’t think so. But somehow it never happens. Even during the season, you never see them actually speak to the players.
I don’t know anything about radio, so maybe the logistics don’t work out. But they’re big enough to get some face time.
That said, it’s an entertaining show and I’m sure their interviews with the Yankees are good.
UPDATE: A-Rod did do a face-to-face interview at his insistence. They asked him to go the camera route and he insisted on going up the press box. Good for him.
