A few pre-game notes:

William Mattingly, Don’s father, passed away in Indiana. Don Mattingly will be away from the team for a few days. … Cuts are coming down after the game. Hughes will be among them. … Larry Bowa, Joe Kerrigan and Bobby Abreu were excused to attend the funeral of Phillies coach John Vukovich in Philadelphia. … Joe Torre said there was no chance that Humberto Sanchez will pitch in a MLB exhibition game. He will throw a bullpen tomorrow from halfway up the mound tomorrow. … Torre said he hasn’t figured out the bullpen yet. But it sounds they won’t start the season with a long man because with the gaps in the schedule the No. 5 starter will be essentially the long man. But at some point they will bring a long man up. Sounds like Karstens.
