they’re putting all the big boys with Karstens.
I know that doesn’t mean anything; the game’s at Legends, and they like to put out many of the Opening Day peeps.

I just wanted to put that thought out there.

  2. G For Giambino March 14th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

Nice to see Underdog in the lineup. Hit one out for us Underdog!!!!

  3. steve March 14th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

A question for you, Peter, or for anyone else that knows:

Why isn’t Sean Henn getting a fair shot this Spring?
Cashman made noise during the off-season about Henn becoming part of the bullpen. He’s looked pretty good in his two outings this Spring. He throws 95 from the left side.

If he doesn’t make the team, the Yanks will surely lose him. They don’t exactly have a bunch of LH pitchers in their system, have even fewer who throw as hard as Henn. Sure, he looked bad as a starter during his “cups of coffee” in ’05 and ’06. But maybe he could be an asset out of the ‘pen.

    What’s going on?

  4. Matt March 14th, 2007 at 2:55 pm

Who’s playing third base? Pete :D lol

  5. li March 14th, 2007 at 2:55 pm

I hope Underdog can take a joke.

  6. Phil March 14th, 2007 at 2:57 pm

Joe Torre was just on Mike and the Mad Dog, it I came away with the impression that the Yankees may start the season with only 11 pitcher instead of the 12 that were talked about all season. He also doesn’t sound worried about Mientkiewicz yet, though he should be.

  7. SJ44 March 14th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

Looking forward to seeing Karstans tonight. Too early to worry about Mienkiewicz, IMO.

I can see going with 11 pitchers in the first two weeks of the season because of the days off. I would rather see 12 though, because in the AL every lineup is dangerous and you need the extra arm.

  8. Phil March 14th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

steve, that’s sort of an urgent issued cause Henn is out of options. They need to keep him or trade him. They cannot release a young pitcher who’s lefty and throws that hard.

  9. mel March 14th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

    Pete,

You’re the man. Your word is gold. I bet if you told him that there was a big bruhaha (sp?) in the blog this morning and that you’ve dubbed him Underdog for the week he’d get a kick out it.

  10. MJ March 14th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Just seeing the word “Underdog 3B” in the lineup card totally cracked me up. Pete, I’m asking you a favor: please just refer to him as Underdog the rest of the way. It’s too damn funny to go back to calling him by his name.

  11. hmmm March 14th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Henn is horrible. i mean, he’s even worse than A-Rod.

  12. mel March 14th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

    Pete,

Didn’t you mention that Henn has another option because of the time spent on the DL in the minors?

  13. wood is good March 14th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

We won’t ask who plays the part of Simon Bar Sinister! :D You rock, Pete!

  14. saucy March 14th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

mel, i thought that was someone else, so i had to check.

    you are correct

    jamie,

i can’t decide on my favorite wire scene. there are so many great ones. for whatever reason, i really dig the scene in season four when they’re all at the bar on st. patty’s singing “i’m a freeborn man of the USA.” something about mcnulty’s face. but the scene you posted is a classic, no doubt.

  16. Jennifer March 14th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

I am getting very nervous about doug. What does he have 1 hit? and it isn’t like he isn’t getting plate appearences. also the errors are making me nervous. To be fair I haven’t seen them, so I don’t know how many are truely his fault. While he isn’t there to hit, he also isn’t there to hit.050 either. If thats the case i’d much rather see Andy with his .240 avg and good glove, and phelps out there.

  17. SJ44 March 14th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Only halfway through the spring. Still too early to worry about Doug. If he continues not to hit, that may be troubling.

They gave him a guaranteed contract, so he will be on the team. If he can hit .260 and defend well, that’s good enough, especially if the RH side of the platoon is hitting.

  18. Ben K. March 14th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

You people are getting worried over *Spring Training*. Take a deep breath or a sedative. Go outside; figure out the month. Get back to me with your worries in May. This is nuts. You all sound like pessimistic Red Sox and Cubs fans.

  19. Jim C March 14th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Oh my god, Pete! I Love you! Your word is gold! Your blog is teh best!!111!!! Abraham!!11!!11111

  20. steve March 14th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

i’ve always wondered, how many minor league options does a player have?

  21. J-Rem March 14th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

I’m not gonna worry about Minkkjfhwiquecxz.. (that’s the way I’m spelling, get used to it)… till he’s batting the interstate 6-8 weeks into the season. He’s here to ‘pick it’ first, and anything with the stick in the nine hole is extra.

  22. Todd Drew March 14th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

You have a busy day at work and the comments can really stack up. It will take me all night to dig through this. Baseball fan is a fulltime job these days.

  23. kerouac March 14th, 2007 at 5:19 pm

j-rem: let’s call him minky. he’s just saving his hits for the regular season. stats don’t mean anything until mid-may.

  24. Charlie March 14th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

Abraham- Why you could never get a job with the AP:

    Because they get stories right.

  25. Bee March 14th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

If Pete is so awful, don’t bother with his blog, Charlie.

    It’s that simple.

  26. Bill March 14th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

Seriously, Pete doesn’t have to do this. I strongly doubt he gets paid extra to do this. And I think alot of the readers here appreciate that Pete gives us a take here on the stories that is, honestly, more human than 99% of what other beat writers give. So if it bothers you so much, don’t read the blog.
    You the man Pete.

  27. Peter Abraham March 14th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

Charlie: Who says I want to work for AP? And they re-wrote the story after seeing what everybody else did.

  28. kerouac March 14th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

i’ve worked as a sports editor for the past 35 years and can tell you guys that what peter is doing with this blog is cutting-edge stuff. he’s the envy of newspapers who are trying to make their websites interesting and profitable.

blogs are emerging as an important part of the industry. i just hope pete is satisfied with the amount of feedback he gets and doesn’t worry about the people who disagree with him. he’s been around long enough to have a thick skin and that’s necessary when you put your name next to an opinion.

it’s a great blog, pete, and your posters are an interesting, albeit a little unruly, crew of yankee fans. i just hope they can pace themselves through 162 games.

  29. SJ44 March 14th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

I concur. You don’t need to take personal shots at Pete. If you disagree with his opinion, have some dialogue with him on it and don’t make it personal.

The blog is GREAT for Yankee fans and I hope it continues to prosper.

Pete may be the best beat writer the Yankees have right now. I don’t see him having any agendas with the players or management of the ballclub. His stories are always well written and the blog is outstanding. The best in town.

He isn’t paid to be a cheerleader. Sure, we can have some disagreements. Its going to happen over the course of the season. But, there is no need to make it personal and insult him. If you can’t have reasonable discourse without insults, then Sonsofsam.com is the perfect place to hang out this season.

  30. Matt Waters March 14th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

Didn’t know where else to put this, but Karstens looks fantastic.

  31. Matt Waters March 14th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Oh, and my bad, I left this out of my last post, but his velocity has jumped up by about 3 MPH since his audition with the club last year. I don’t know where the hell it came from, but he’s dealing this spring, and keeping it up tonight.

  32. SJ44 March 14th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

I want Karstans to make it very difficult for them to farm him out. At worst, he should be the long guy in the bullpen.

The way he is pitching, no way he should start the year in AAA, IMO.

  33. kerouac March 14th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

karstens throws strikes. i love watching him pitch. reminds me of the younger moose. strike, strike, ball, put the guy away. it’s very stress-free to watch.

  34. drew March 14th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

kerouac, very well said. i’m sure pete understands that with the rise in popularity of his blog that it’s impossible not to come across a few people like charlie. i’ve seen it happen with other popular blogs.

charlie, you would be doing all of the readers of this blog a favor if you would submit your comments to pete in email form rather than posting anymore. his email address is pabraham@lohud.com

  35. Charlie March 14th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

“I concur. You don’t need to take personal shots at Pete.”

Pete doesn’t need to take personal shots at A-Rod. But he does, pretty transparently.

“He isn’t paid to be a cheerleader.”

He’s paid to be a little bit objective, or at least not let personal vendettas influence what he writes.

  36. MK March 14th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

It’s a pity that this once-fantastic blog is rapidly turning into an echo chamber for the A-Rod haters.
