Pregame: Pirates vs. Yankees

Peter Abraham
March
18

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Johnny Damon CF
Derek Jeter SS
Jason Giambi DH
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Hideki Matsui LF
Jorge Posada C
Josh Phelps 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Melky Cabrera RF
Mike Mussina RHP

Pregame chatter: LHP Zach Duke starts for the Pirates. He’s their Opening Day starter. … Mariano will pitch an inning at some point. … Bobby Abreu will take BP on the field again. … Humberto Sanchez will throw a bullpen in 25 minutes. I suspect he will get cut sometime shortly after.

    Peter,
I seem to remember talk about trying to alter Sanchez’s delivery to alleviate some of the stress on his elbow. Have you heard anything about that?

  2. EV

I really hope Moose looks better today than on his last time out.

  3. Joey

EV, until his fastball is at full speed, I don’t expect him to be any better. If he’s touching 88, 89, 90 and still getting hit hard, then we have a problem.

  4. Owen

    Peter,

Looks like “No Maas” got Buster this time. The amount of Arod bashing is disgraceful. I have a idea, lets trade Arod and get another 3rd baseman. So that when reports bash the new 3rd baseman at least it will be justified. No one compares to Arod, match the numbers up and I don’t think anyones even close.

    Your buddy Owen

“EV, until his fastball is at full speed, I don’t expect him to be any better. If he’s touching 88, 89, 90 and still getting hit hard, then we have a problem.”
I know… but last time he himself said he wasn’t happy with how he was pitching. I believe he said he wasn’t getting the ball over the plate and he was getting deep into counts. Not a good sign.

  6. Russell

Micah Owings is kicking butt this Spring Training. Can someone please explain to me again why we didn’t take a shot at him?

  7. Deric

    Russell,

Just imagine, if you were a GM, would you give up a top prospect like Phil Hughes, or in that case Micah Owings, for an old guy who has back problem like Randy Johnson? That should answer your question.

  8. Peter Abraham

Russell: Who’s to say they didn’t? Meanwhile, Randy has yet to appear in a game in spring training.

You have to be realistic. They trade was as much about saving the money.

  9. Neil Keefe

Moose needs to pick it up

  10. Russell

Hey I’m not saying the trade was bad. The Yankees robbed Arizona. From the beginning the package the Yanks would get just seemed like a “you get what you pay for” deal. If that was the case, its hard to see why the Yanks wouldnt pay a little extra for his services, but the GM changed his mind I guess.

  11. Russell

Yea Pete, and getting Johnson the hell out of there so he wouldn’t complain when Clemens comes and demands a $23million vacation from the yankees haha

  12. Rob B

Mussina struggled last year during ST too, but he pitched well when it counted. Don’t be concerned unless he still looks shaky his second start of the real season.

  13. Emobacca

Good to see Phelps getting the start. I so hope he makes the team over Phillips

  14. Russell

    Emobacca… me too.

    blog spam?

  17. Baseballs

    Nothing is sacred in cyberspace

  18. Mike

    Giambi with the Grandslam.

  19. EV

Interesting outing for Moose. No runs, but he didn’t look too sharp until the 3rd inning. Behind in counts a couple of times, and no strikeouts… in fact no first-pitch strikes until the 3rd inning.
    Better, though.

  20. Emobacca

    Moose topped out at 86

  21. Donnie

What does it mean that Sanchez will get cut? Does that mean he goes to the minors?

  22. saucy

    yes
