Pettitte scratched with back spasms

Andy Pettitte did not throw his bullpen today because of back spasms he suffered yesterday while lifting weights.

Joe Torre said Pettitte would not pitch as scheduled on Friday.

Pettitte told us that he hadn’t given up on that idea but admitted that the wisest course of action would be to pitch on Saturday or Sunday.

Pettitte said his back had responded to treatment and he didn’t believe the injury was serious. It’s worth noting that the team is not sending him for an MRI.

Pettitte said he needs only one more start to get ready for the season. He has built his arm up well and pitched great so far (10 5 0 0 2 7).

Back in a few with some Pettitte audio.

This supports the Verducci article in SI.com on the advanced age of the yanks. Guys don’t get back spams when they’re 24. Karstens gets 20+ starts,

Thank goodness we got a lot of guys in reserve. I have a feeling we’re gonna need em!
