Chien-Ming Wang told us he was “very sad” that he can’t start the season with the team. But he seemed optimistic about his return, saying he already felt much better than he did yesterday.

He could be back on a mound in 10 days.

Here is Brian Cashman announcing the news:

Terrible news. I hope he takes enough time to heal. Pettitte a lock for opening day?

Wang’s injury is not the end of the world. While Karstens and Rasner weren’t Cy Young candidates last year, they will do a fine job of filling in for however many starts Wang misses this time of year (what, about 4?). Remember, last year we lost two All-Star corner outfielders and still won the division and led the league in scoring with an outfield made up of a)one guy with a broken bone in his foot, b)a rookie who was booed off the field last year, c)a fading star at the end of his career, and d)a castoff from Kansas City.

Don’t panic. Panicking is for losers. Let Boston panic when Papelbon’s shoulder falls off, or JD Drew is on his third month on the DL, or Manny walks off in the sixth inning demanding a trade. We will be “make an adjustment” and be fine.

This is pretty terrible news to wake up to. Thanks for the audio though.

Well, the good side of this (if there is such a thing) is that Wang’s injury happened over 10 days before the start of the season.

Did Cash say Veras had bone chips removed?

  6. Emobacca March 24th, 2007 at 12:12 pm

Yeah Veras is going to be out for a while

“He could be back on a mound in 10 days”

Pete… Que Pasa? Cashman (on your tape) said a MINIMUM of 3 weeks… probably ready to pitch in late April. Where did ’10 days’ come from? Is there more recent news?

  8. Stan March 24th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

The way I see it we dont have a grueling schedual the first month of the season, Karstens is on a hot streak, and is Wang misses the first three weeks of the season he’ll be fresher in case we’re battling for a division late in the year. So in no way is this good news but you can always put a positive spin on it.

10 days meaning back on the mound throwing in the bullpen.

recent yankee teams tend to overcome injuries. remember when jeter got hurt on opening day of 2003 and the yanks got off to a 20-3 start? or last year with sheff and matsui?

this just means the offense has to do some serious slugging in april.

wang’s injury will actually keep him stronger for the stretch run as he’ll have less innings of stress on his arm, elbow and shoulder.

    Old Fan:

10 days until back on the mound.

End of April until starting a Yankees game.
