Wang making miracle recovery?

Peter Abraham

wang1.jpgFor a guy supposedly out until late April, Chien-Ming Wang looked pretty healthy this morning.

The Wanger was out on the field at 9:07 a.m. and played catch with Ron Guidry for 13 minutes. He made 70 throws, most from a distance of 120 feet. And he was throwing from a semi windup and putting some zip on the ball.

“I don’t feel anything,” said Wang, who has a slight tear in his right hamstring. “Yesterday I felt it when I walked. Today, nothing.”

Brian Cashman said the team will be cautious and place Wang on the DL to start the season. But that can be backdated into spring training, so Wang could back earlier than initially expected.

I had several hamstring pulls in my days of baseball and softball. Grade 1 pulls feel fine as long as your not running all out, or striding to hit, or pushing off the rubber. The right hamstring is his “push off” leg and will take a while to heal. Take it slow Wangster!

Since the Devil Rays lineup is predominantly righty – lets start Colter Bean!

  2. joejoejoe

It’s the magic healing power of having UCLA in his NCAA pool. I guess Rock Chalk, Jayhawk doesn’t translate well in Taiwan.

  3. beavis

pete, you’re the greatest – keep up the posts – they get me thru the day!

  4. Matt

what did I say about 3 times on this blog yesterday? Just what you said Pete.

  5. Jessica

Was he supposed to do nothing but treatment within three days? Was he supposed to do catching stuff within 10 days?In my opinion,Yankee better pay more attention and give him sometime.Take it easy!Wang!April is still very early and we can wait now,but not in August,September or even in October.

  6. murphydog

Sorry, but it’s no miracle. What you see in this photo (apparently taken from the Zapruder video) is Wang keeping his arm in shape while his leg heals. He’s got to keep throwing on flat ground to keep the arm in tone but at the same time not pushing off on the bad leg. LathamJoe is right. It’s the push off that will be the problem along with jumping off to first to cover on a ground ball. Wang will be out for a while.

  7. Todd Drew

It’s certainly good news that they even allowed him to throw.

“Brian Bruney pitched a scoreless inning and returned to the clubhouse to find his locker encased in yellow tape by some pranksters. He needed a knife to free his clothes.”

does anyone know who’s the prankster? is this the same guy who decorated Pavano’s locker with tabloid pages last season?

    I bet it’s A-Rod.

  9. JDnotDrew

It’s time to bubble wrap Pavano and put him in a crate marked FRAGILE and send him to New York if he’s going to pitch opening day.

  10. Alan

I think it’s time for Pete to invest in a new digital camera!

  11. murphydog

The Yankees should have Nettles be special adviser for humor next Spring. These guys could use some more laughs.

  12. murphydog

I hear the Yanks are going to keep Pavs in an iron lung until Opening Day. They at least should take his car keys away.

  13. gargoyle

WEEI in Boston has been gleefully reporting on Wang’s injury and Pettitte’s back spasms 3 times an hour for the last day.

  14. JDnotDrew

Hey Pete: Your goin All-Star here. Having to answer same old questions all the time (ie:why don’t you get a new camera?) Maybe you can go to Underdog for some advice.

  15. murphydog

Pete Abe’s agent, Scott Bore-ass, said today; “Peter has no plans to use a digital camera, although he does have that option. He wants to remain a sports writer and has no plans to become a photog and will not discuss it again this season.”

Brian Cashman noted: “Pete Abe has an already substantial job as a sports writer, one he has earned. The digital camera option is up to him. We won’t be getting him a camera this year.”

I can’t believe someone actually feel happy or cheer for injury. This is not good at all.Even though I am a yankee fan,I don’t want anyone getting hurt, including everyone in the Red Sox.I can’t believe this.Bad!!!

“does anyone know who’s the prankster? is this the same guy who decorated Pavano’s locker with tabloid pages last season?”
According to this morning’s paper, it was Kyle Farnsworth and Robinson Cano.

  18. Joseph P.

Cano seems like the kind of guy who would pull give someone the “hot foot.”

  19. Eric

Farnsworth does sound like a jokester. I’m not surprised.

I hope Wang takes it slow.
I always check out his interviews given to the Taiwanese reporters after some major things happen (albeit a few words as he isn’t much of a talker). ‘Cause at least when he’s speaking in mother tongue, he gets his point across more clearly. Plus his quotes reveal more emotion when he’s not reduced to baby talks in English.
Example: Last year after that Zimmerman walk-off homer. He was quoted in the States, “I was mad. I lost the game.” And then I turned on the TV here in Taiwan, he says, “I’ve never been this mad my whole life. I was closed to tears.” :D
I think Pete (Hi, Pete! Nice job.) is right in his assumption that Wang really wanted this Opening Day gig. The kid is clearly disappointed and wants to be back bad. As a fan of the team and especially as his fan as a fellow Taiwanese, I really wish he could take the whole thing in stride and show us what he does best — one pitch at a time; no rush, no hustle. Everyone is giving him pressure as it is, the least thing we need is from Wang himself.
It sure is a bummer not to see Wang pitch The Opening Day, but it’s only one day out of whole season. Yanks will do fine without him for a month. So go take a nap or something, A-Min(what we call him here)!

  21. Anthony

Murphydog- I thought that was really funny. Great translation into boras-cash speak. Good to see that.

I love pranks, and I hope the yanks keep playing them on each other, it’s healthy.

  22. hmmm

if there was one guy on the yankees i would not want to pull a practical joke on, it’s Brian Bruney. i’d take my chances with Miguel Cairo. Bruney is a beast.

great news about Wang. he’ll be fine. although i already sold all my tickets for this season and got rid of my yankee hats and shirt after reading Gloomy’s analysis. our utility infielder stinks, so i traded my yankee stuff for Milwaukee Brewers gear, no point in watching this season.

it’s going to be a great year for the Brew Crew! go Brewers!!

  23. EV

Found this on the Star Ledger… it had me dying of laughter.
“Does this mean the injury isn’t as severe as first thought? Wang still says it will be a week to 10 days before he gets on a mound, but it has to be a good sign that he can throw so soon after injuring it, and without discomfort.

As we were talking to Wang about it after, Mike Mussina ran up and dramatically gasped, “Wang! You’re back! Thank god!”, shaking his hand and giving him a big hug. Then Mussina took credit for healing him.”

  24. jennifer

“[Scott] Proctor said if [Johnny] Damon did it, he would do it, so I’m working on Damon,” Bruney said. In a bizarre postgame prank, Bruney’s locker was completely wrapped in yellow tape, with a fallout shelter symbol, and autographed by Proctor, Jeff Karstens, Robinson Cano, Humberto Sanchez and Chris Britton

    from the Bergen Record.

  25. Grace

Different Taiwanese media have different explaination of Wang’ throwing: one said out of his own idea because he felt better but Gator said no, after consulted with the trainer, then they did; one said team told him that he can throw maybe just want to keep his arm strength, said, he was surprised and happy that he can throw again….

    ha…this something…..

one more thing, about Wang’s left hamstring injury back in 2004, according Appledaily, Wang said that due to the Olympics game against Japan, he hurt during the game, and didn’t leave the game, pitcheed with some protected gear on until he reach his pitch counts that Yankess allow him to :100 pitches, but actually he threw about103~104 and serve a homerun to tie the game…. And back to AAA, still pitched unitl he felt it worse and shut down to end this 2004 season….

Also, some report said that most MLB team will want the player get back 100% and in Taiwan due short of roster, player came back playing maybe they are just 80% recovered,

so I think Yanks will take good care on Wang…

  26. Lili

    Among the pitching staff…
I read it from Taiwanese media, that when Wang showed up to play catch this morning, Pettite also was there, incredulous, and stayed to watch him throw and gave him advices on arm movements. And Igawa was heard saying, “Without Wang, Yanks’ pitching line-up is definitely weaker. I feel that I should step up myself.”
Gator initially told Wang no when the kid wanted to throw some balls, but when was told OK after consultation, he told Wang, “I got good news and I got bad new. Good news is you can throw. Bad news is, you’re gonna throw with me.”
And afterward, Wang said he felf fine, no tightness or pain like he felt the day before, while Gator was heard yelling for icepac for himself. Hehe.
Still, I wish Wang would take it slow.

  27. Crooked Pitch - Chien-Ming Wang Could Pitch Earlier Than Expected

[...] New York Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang, who is supposed to be out until late April with a hamstring problem, has designs of returning early. He made 70 throws from 120 feet with some zip on the ball. “Brian Cashman said the team will be cautious and place Wang on the DL to start the season. But that can be backdated into spring training, so Wang could back earlier than initially expected.” [...]
