Karstens tests are negative; Torre audio

Joe Torre said that the MRI and CT scans on Jeff Karstens’ elbow were negative.

“Outstanding news,” he said.

No word on what happens next for Karstens, but he probably won’t make the team given that he will be shut down for at least a few days.

Torre did not name his rotation. But here is how the pitchers are lined up:

Tomorow: Pavano
Wednesday: Rasner
Thursday: Mussina
Friday: Pettitte in a minor-league game
Saturday: Igawa

That would line up Pavano to pitch Opening Day with Mussina and Pettitte to follow. Igawa would be lined up to face the Orioles on April 6.

Based on the schedule, the Yankees would need a fifth starter once (April 8 against Baltimore) before April 22. And on April 22, Chien-Ming Wang could be back to face the Red Sox.

Here is Torre’s postgame:

Could you talk a little about Wang’s progress? Thanks

Well, that would mean that the “injuries” are not much of a big deal, or at least I hope so.

Wang is throwing comfortably off flat ground, but they’ll still shut him down for a few weeks. That just means he’ll still be strong in September – October.

Pettitte thinks he’s OK after throwing a bullpen session. He doesn’t look like he’ll miss a start.

Karstens is probably back in the mix, but his last two outings nudge him slightly behind Rasner, or so it would seem….

So maybe Karstens has just reverted to his prior suboptimal form.

Regardless, it’s good to hear that Karstens is OK.
