Pregame chatter: Andy Pettitte threw 25 pitches in the bullpen and felt no discomfort in his back. Joe Torre will fill us in later but the plan seems to be for Pettitte to throw another bullpen on Wednesday and pitch in a game Friday or Saturday. … Krazy Kyle Farnsworth, Mike Myers and Brian Bruney are scheduled to follow Igawa to the mound. … Jorge Posada is back from a brief illness. …. The Yankees signed one-time Mets prospects Aarom Baldiris. He is one of the minor-leaguers in uniform today.

Good to see Andy on the mend. Looks like Posada kicked whatever he had. I’m cheering for the Yankees to win, but would like to see Shane Victorino have a good game. He’s the kid from Maui who broke through with the Phillies when Rowand broke his nose running into the outfield wall.
hey pete will the meetings be after the game or did they hold them early. (cough cough) cut Villone
anyone have any background on this baldiris fellow?
Pete
Word around the internets is that Phelps has made the 25-man roster (well deserved, considering his spring). Any word on that? I’m assuming this means bye bye to Phillips.
Brian, where did you hear that? .. I had read the same thing in yesterday’s newspaper, but they didn’t have full comfirmation yet; just speculation from what officials from other teams are saying the yankees told them.
Hopefully Igawa shows he can get ahead of hitters and throw first pitch strikes today.
There’s still a chance that Phillips makes it through waivers. Often people are DFA and no one picks them up — even if they have some value (you would think a lousy NL club would have picked up the versatile Colter Bean, whose AAA numbers are ridiculous, and who can close, long-relieve and start).
It’ll be a shame if we lose Phillips — he’s a nice player to have around since he can play all the infield positions and the outfield in a pinch; in a perfect world he would be the utility infielder and make the team.
I’m glad Phelps made the team, though. He deserved it. Now let’s hope Henn made it over Villone.
I would like to see Pettitte pitching on the opener, but Don’t rush it,Pettitte.Take whatever time you need.Baseball is the long season. We really need you the whole season.
Turn Two –
On NYYFans.com, an article in the Newark Star Ledger, I believe, was quoted. Is that where you saw it?
I don’t think they mentioned it being confirmed, which was why I was checking to see if Peter has heard anything.
If it’s true, I’d be happy. Phelps has earned a shot, and chances are Phillips would probably clear waivers.
“It’ll be a shame if we lose Phillips—he’s a nice player to have around since he can play all the infield positions and the outfield in a pinch; in a perfect world he would be the utility infielder and make the team.”
not to nitpick, but Phillips is a pretty bad 3Bman and cannot play a credible 2B and certainly not SS. if he was a decent 2Bman, he would have been in the majors a long time ago.
i know you meant he could play some other IF positions in a pinch, but it’s not like he can be your utility guy. if you had to run him out there at SS, your team is probably in trouble.
Andy Phillips’s best quality seems to be that he’s a nice guy.
His versatility is illusory and his bat has been almost non-existent.
If he clears waivers, is there even room for him at SWB?
Rich,
lol. You missed another one. “He’s not Miguel Cairo.” Unlike a lot of other fans, I like Miggy. But there’s a lot of people who think there are better utility infield guys out there. It’s like the quest for the holy utility guy.
I would guess that this will be our everyday lineup come next week. how sick is it, that someone who almost won the batting title is batting 8th!! Poor guy will be walked all the time in front of Dougie.
good start for igawa.. i think hes proved to me that he can definately get major league hitters out, if he can refine that control he’ll be worth the money
I’m glad Phelps made it. I was afraid Torre was going to go with one of his personal favorites, Andy. Phillips was lousy at the plate last year and his glove isn’t really needed with Minky available for late inning defense.
Hopefully, Phelps’ good spring continues into the regular season and he can provide some production when he’s in there.
Monster shot from Alex, into the wind. 3-0 Yanks.
That was a proper shot. Into the wind and over the scoreboard.
I’ll be at the game on the 5th so lets pray we see some: Pavano, Mussina, Pettitte!
Another nice inning for Kei.
Has that HR landed yet?
Stacey, it landed on the field at the minor league league complex across the street where Phil Hughes stepped on it and rolled his ankle. f’ing a-rod.
Actually, the idea that Miguel Cairo is a good defender is the illusion. He’s average at best, and he’s a horrendous third baseman. He plays a decent second, but he’s prone to errors. (He’s also not very good at first.) The only thing Cairo has over Phillips is a touch more speed.
Their defense is at about the same level and I would rather Phillips because he seems more likely to run into an extra-base hit or home run than Cairo (who hasn’t gone long in over a year).
The truth is, if ANY utility infielder is playing significant time, the team is in trouble.

LOL!
The story I heard was that the ball landed on Eric Duncan’s head – now he thinks he’s Pedro Cerrano, and he’s hitting the skin off the ball.
