Off to the Fort, catch you later

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 27, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees face the Twins this afternoon at Fort Myers with the game on ESPN.

It’ll be presumed Opening Day starter (it still boggles the mind) Carl Pavano on the mound. Not many regulars are making the long (2:20) trip.

I’m headed over to Legends Field to do my due dilgence then we’ll drive down. I’ll check back in later with the lineups, but that won’t be until around lunch time.

So get some work done for a change.

Or go to the great baseball-reference.com site and see what players you share a birthday with.

Catch you later.

  3. jennifer March 27th, 2007 at 8:30 am

Oh damn the game is on espn :( I didn’t set to tape it. I’d like to watch Carl pitch. Time to make phone calls. LOL

Why are they letting Carl make a 2 hour plus bus ride?

For those of you waiting for Zambrano to come walking through the door next year:

“Asked by SI.com if he’d consider the New York Yankees, Zambrano said: “I like the Yankees, but I don’t see myself pitching at Yankee Stadium. Too many rules. If I play in New York, it’s going to be with the Mets. First of all, because I get to hit. And I love hitting. I can’t say … that I would never play for the Yankees. Hopefully no, but you never know.”"

  5. sunny615 March 27th, 2007 at 8:46 am

On a side note, I for one would like to see Hughes take that fifth spot in April – even if it is for only one start. It would be worth it to see how he fairs against batters in the show. Then when everyone recoops, send him back down and see you next year!

  6. Matt March 27th, 2007 at 9:05 am

Ironically (or is it coincidentally?) today is my birthday, and I share it with Miller Huggins, Effa Manley (owner of the Negro League’s Newark Eagles), and the immortal Adam Melhuse.

Did anyone else see the crappy blog that is beating Pete’s on that SI vote? There is definitely some SHADY business going down. We need to make a grassroots effort to get Pete’s blog back on top!

    http://si.com/yankeesvote

It looks like the people from that site just kept voting over and over again. If we have to do the same thing, we should. That other blog is crappy.

Johnny Damon shares a b-day with me.

  9. jennifer March 27th, 2007 at 9:22 am

He hopes he never plays for the Yankees. Well guess what buddy, I don’t want you here either. I’d much rather see Tyler or Phil here.

  10. TurnTwo March 27th, 2007 at 10:07 am

hmmm, tyler clippard or carlos zambrano? yeah, thats a tough one…

  11. Doreen March 27th, 2007 at 10:10 am

What rules? You have to travel in a suit???!! You have to get a haircut???!! If that’s too many rules, well, he’d never make it in the real world.

But, in Zambrano’s defense, if he likes to have the opportunity to hit, then the American League is not for him.

And I do notice he did not say ABSOLUTELY NOT. Because surely if the Yankees offer the most money, he’ll be like most everyone else and take it.

  12. Jennifer March 27th, 2007 at 10:11 am

You want someone on the team who doesn’t want to be here? He clearly stated he doesn’t. and just because he is good in the NL doesn’t mean he will be good in the al east!!

  13. Doreen March 27th, 2007 at 10:14 am

I wouldn’t want someone who doesn’t want to be here. I don’t like it when someone comes ONLY for the money. I don’t think Zambrano is headed this way, anyway.

  14. saucy March 27th, 2007 at 10:21 am

Elmer Stricklett was born 100 years before me. i’m honored.

got Zambrano on my fantasy team for the 3rd year straight. (closet cubs fan). also got both asain yankee pitchers.

  15. Lori March 27th, 2007 at 10:22 am

Thanks Pete for giving us something else to do besides work. What fun would that be?

Anyway, I share my birthday with the Melkman! Of course, he was born the year I graduated high school. Nothing like a cold dose of reality first thing in the morning.

  16. murphydog March 27th, 2007 at 10:57 am

According to the chat during the game yesterday (I think it was Flaherty) Zambrano is said to be an extremely stubborn SOB about pitch selection. I’m sure he’s one to go his own way on a lot of other things too. Maybe that’s part of his “rules” comment. Zambrano ain’t coming here because Posada would ring his neck. He’s not good enough to tell Jorgie to pound salt.

In any event, I think Cash has figured out that there will be no more former NL pitchers in the Bronx. (Except for Pettitte of course).

  17. Rich March 27th, 2007 at 11:08 am

I would take Zambrano in a heartbeat. The NL pitcher thing is ridiculous.

  18. Doreen March 27th, 2007 at 11:09 am

‘Cause Pettitte is a former AL pitcher first.

  19. saucy March 27th, 2007 at 11:12 am

“I think Cash has figured out that there will be no more former NL pitchers in the Bronx.”

i’m not saying he’d be the next santana in the AL, but i don’t think i’d lump him in with pavano, wright, etc…

  20. Russell March 27th, 2007 at 11:14 am

Even if TJ Beam pitches the Yankees’ home opener, the Yanks are still gonna win the World Series.

  21. mel March 27th, 2007 at 11:25 am

I’m sure that Zambrano would like to have that quote back. But that’s the wonderful thing about words. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

His agent must’ve had a coronary. “What the **** were you thinking? How else are we going to drive up the price?”

  22. Wolf In Pinstripes March 27th, 2007 at 11:46 am

Hmm… I share a birthday with Kirk Saarloos, who I watched play here in lexington, KY for the Astros A club a couple years ago.

I also share with ….. Buck Showalter. 8^(

  23. blondlobo March 27th, 2007 at 12:09 pm

I share a birthday with Jeff Karstens, Rafael Palmeiro (oh, great) and Kevin Millar.

  24. 3rd gen yankee fan March 27th, 2007 at 12:28 pm

    Rickey Henderson, w00t!

  25. hmmm March 27th, 2007 at 12:29 pm

“I wouldn’t want someone who doesn’t want to be here. I don’t like it when someone comes ONLY for the money.”

unless it’s Giambi, Mussina, Damon or someone else i’ve already decided i like. this excludes A-Rod, the greedy b@stard.

  26. hmmm March 27th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

“His agent must’ve had a coronary. “What the **** were you thinking? How else are we going to drive up the price?â€? ”

i would laugh so hard if the Cubs lost Zambrano after flushing $80M+ down the toilet this winter on Lilly, Marquis, and DeRosa.

Lilly is decent, but if it costs them Zambrano, they probably spent that money foolishly.

  27. mel March 27th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....act/1.html

Before you guys start writing off Zambrano as a bad guy you have to read the story. It’s just about negotiations and stuff, but what was left out of the quote in the earlier post was he said it “with a laugh”.

He likes to hit, but any pitcher worth his salt needs to prove himself in the AL. Who knows. Zambrano said it himself. You never know.

  28. Gayle March 27th, 2007 at 12:44 pm

    Murphydog-

I think you are confusing your Zambrano’s. The one that they were refering to on the broadcast was the Zambrano that pitches for Toronto right now and used to pitch for The Mets (he was theone that was involved in the infamous Scott Kazmir trade and no one really cares where he wants to pitch).

The Zambrano that is being discussed is Carlos and pitches for the Cubs and is a free agent next year and the one that everyone wants.

  29. Rich March 27th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

If the Cubs were dumb enough to waste all that money on Soriano, they will find a way to pay Zambrano. So the issue is probably moot.

  30. LathamJoe March 27th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

    murphydog:
Flaherty was referring to VICTOR Zambrano, who pitched for the Devil Rays when Flash caught him.
Johnny Damon said the same things about playing in New York.
Money and success have a way of changing ballplayers’ attitudes!

  31. mel March 27th, 2007 at 12:49 pm

    From mlb.com:
Craig Hansen sent back to minors.

“In Hansen’s case, the Red Sox feel he needs more time to develop, as he had been rushed to the Major Leagues in both 2005 and 2006 because of a lack of bullpen depth on the club.”

Cautionary tale on why kids shouldn’t be rushed. Even though Hughes would probably fare better, it’s good to know that the Yankees are taking their time with him.

  32. brockdc March 27th, 2007 at 12:50 pm

Me and the immortal Highball Wilson share a b-day. I’ll drink to that!

  33. mike March 27th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

I have heard about Carlos Zambrano.. being a bit stuffed in the head.. particularly when backed into a corner and doign things as he pleases..

  34. Doreen March 27th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

    Hmmm –

Well, you got me, there, I guess. But once a guy is on the team you follow, you mostly end up rooting for them, regardless.

  35. murphydog March 27th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Yup.. got my Zambranos mixed up. (Dang. I hate when that happens). I would take the good Zambrano too and the good Zambrano was probably just stirring it up to get his name in the mix.

As for the “no more NL pitchers in the Bronx,” putting the Zambrano mix up aside, an anti-NL bias is not necessarily Holy Writ, but it’s not ridiculous. I don’t know anybody who seriously maintains that the pitching in the NL is the same as pitching in the AL, especially the AL East. It would have to be a very exceptional NL pitcher for me to jump at the chance to bring him to the Bronx.

In the NL to AL East direction, let’s consider Becket, Burnett and Pavano. Johnson was OK, but he’s a different thing. In the AL to NL direction, look at Pedro. He was practically done in Boston and now he’s still hanging on in Flushing. How about Arroyo? So-so in Boston but becomes a star in the NL. maybe it’s too small a sample, but it’s all I can come up with right now. Anybody got more examples, either pro or con?

  36. saucy March 27th, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Shawn Chacon has been tearing it up this spring with the pirates… kidding. but, i’d bet Lilly has a career year…

  37. hmmm March 27th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

“In the NL to AL East direction, let’s consider Becket, Burnett and Pavano.”

    AJ Burnett

    2005 ERA+ FLA 117
    2006 ERA+ TOR 118

  38. hmmm March 27th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

“In Hansen’s case, the Red Sox feel he needs more time to develop, as he had been rushed to the Major Leagues in both 2005 and 2006 because of a lack of bullpen depth on the club.

the irony is that the yankees were blasted in 2005 for not drafting Hansen. why? b/c some people said the yankees should pick Hansen b/c they said he could have helped the major league team down the stretch in 2005.

    that was the reasoning.

  39. hmmm March 27th, 2007 at 3:28 pm

of course, the papers never revisit things like this and admit they were wrong.

    http://yankees.scout.com/2/387558.html

“The New York media, in the days after the draft, has let loose on the Yankees’ scouting department for passing on local star, college closer, Craig Hansen. However, most of the basis of the complaints are simply going by the needs of the big league club…. “

  40. Deric March 27th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

No, not everyone likes Carlos Zambrano actually. The type of pitcher like him will never succeed in the AL East; unless he can command his pitches.
