Pavano on his outing today

Here is the Rajah of Rehab on his final outing of the spring. By the way, Pavano threw 82 pitches in the game and 12 more in the bullpen.

I guess I may have to come up with a new nickname for Carl. We should give it time, maybe a month or so. The Connecticut Bulldog? The Healthy Horse? The Italian Matsuzaka?

“He’s done everything we could have hoped for,” Ron Guidry told me. “He had a little better velocity today then he had his last time and that’s a great sign. He’s building his arm up. I think he’s ready.”

Here is Pavano:

Keep the nickname. Dont want to jinx anything!

  2. Fernando Alejandro March 27th, 2007 at 4:37 pm

    I like Italian Matsuzaka personally.

  3. hmmm March 27th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

makes sense, Italians don’t use the letter “K”. he can be Dice-6-3Groundout

  4. 99ers March 27th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

clearly, Phelps is the Grapefruit League Spring Training MVP !!! (runner up: P. Branco.)

I think we need to lock Carl in a closet somewhere until Monday. With this guy’s luck, he’ll sprain his shoulder pulling something out of his locker between now and then. I’m certainly pulling for him on opening day, but I just have a terrible feeling in my stomach that this is just too good to be true.

  6. Matt Waters March 27th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

It has to be the Connecticut Bulldog. That’s great.

  7. MelHall27 March 27th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

This doesn’t apply to Pavano, but I like the nickname “Andrew Dice-K” – ohhhhhhh!

  8. Matt March 27th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

Carl impressed me he didn’t have any strike outs but still found ways to get the outs, hopefully he stays healthy and can have a solid year.

  9. Whatever March 27th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

On that nickname for Pavano, I think “The Prodigal Son” would be appropriate, all things considered. If Pavano returns on opening day and wins, we’ll butcher the fatted calf, by God.

  10. fatboy March 27th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

I like the nickname “The Paper Tiger” or “The $39.95 Million Dollar Bust.

  11. Frank March 27th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

LOL. Good call Whatever. Definitely a lot of similarity with that tale from the bible and Pavano’s tenure with the Yankees.

The audio was painful to listen to. Lots of backround noise and couldn’t hear the questions being asked. Keep working Peter…

Wang was incredibly lucky last year, and that’s unlikely to continue.

Andy Pettitte had a 4.20 ERA in the NL last year and now he’s going back to the AL East?

The Yankees lineup is intimidating, sure. Their pitching staff, not so much. You can’t realistically spin either of those facts any other way without some very “tinted” glasses.

  14. Todd Drew March 27th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

Pavano is certainly getting there. I feel comfortable going into Opening Day.

  15. Skippy March 27th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

How about “Careful, Carl!” or “Precautionary Pavano?”

  16. SlickBomb March 27th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

    How about “Carl Soze”?

  17. Zander March 27th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

If he’s great, I like Connecticut Bulldog but there is already a Yankee with the nickname” Jim “Bulldog” Bouton.

    If he stinks, Carla Buttocks

I’m probably about to start up another firestorm here – but I think the pluses will outweigh the minuses… so…

I’d feel comfortable going into opening day if the Yanks weren’t facing Kazmir. The Yankee bats better be awake that day because if that kid is on, you’re gonna see a lot guys whiffing.

Pavan \Pav”an\, n. [F. pavane; cf. It. & Sp. pavana, and Sp.
pavon, pavo, a peacock, L. pavo.]
A stately and formal Spanish dance for which full state
costume is worn; — so called from the resemblance of its
movements to those of the peacock. [Written also pavane,
    paven, pavian, and pavin.]

    Hmmmm….How about “Peacock”?

  23. Neil March 27th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

do u have a link about cox

  24. Todd Drew March 27th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

    Bloodyank78,
Kazmir is tough. This lineup has a good chance against him because they don’t chase. He usually throws a lot of pitches and we have a shot at having him out of the game in the fifth or sixth even if he is throwing well.

  25. bloodyank78 March 27th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

That’s the key, get to Tampa’s crappy bullpen. All I am saying is that when he’s on, he makes guys look stupid. I watched him last season on July 3rd against Boston. Complete game shutout w/10 K’s. Just sick.

“Wang was incredibly lucky last year, and that’s unlikely to continue. ”

    prove it.

  27. Jake March 27th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

Pavano wins 20 games and starts game 1 of the playoffs???

Oh my. If hes healthy for 34 starts…

  28. Jake March 27th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

This “Wang got lucky” thing is very naive. You dont have to strikeout 12 guys a game to win and dominate in this league.

95 mph sinker that is damn near unhittable does the trick. Hes got great stuff. If he wanted to strike out 10 a game, Im fairly certain he could. But why bother when you can get 24 ground balls and have the guys behind you loving every minute of it?

Ask opposing hitters if he was lucky.

    - wang was not “lucky” last year. wang’s a very, very good pitcher.

    - a-rod doesn’t need more “support.” what a-rod needs is to shut up, hit the ball, and not fire balls in every direction all around the infield, costing his team runs and, ultimately, games. what a-rod needs is a career year. what a-rod needs is to help the yankees win a ring and then get the hell out of town so i never have to engage in this discussion again.

    - carl “the peacock” pavano. it’s perfect. so fitting.

anyone know how hughes has done in minor league games?

  33. murphydog March 27th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Let’s not get fancy. Let’s just call Pavano “Meat.” Plain old “Meat.”

  34. TRF March 27th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

At least for the past three weeks his pitching has done the talking, with slow but steady improvement. I don’t think we could have asked for more. He seems to be handling it well.

  35. rbizzler March 27th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

I prefer the Italian Matsuzaka. It makes little to no sense but is strangley enjoyable. Let’s roll with that.

On another note: Remember the days of Carlapalooza? If that isn’t one of the greatest agent-created hype machines of all time then I don’t know what is (the A-Rod book Boras created might trump it though).

Andy could not have his wits about him while batting today! Obviously he knows that Torre will cut him. It seems cruel and unusual punishment to just delay that and let him hack away heartbroken. And what a shame, can you imagine doing a good job at work and then they bring in somebody else just to see if they can do better, after 4-5 years of very good performance in spite of personal tragedy and illness? It sucks to me and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if releasing Phillips will COME BACK TO HAUNT THE YANKEES. Mintk. cant hit, Phelps cant field, and Giambi will be on DL by May!! And Mint. will probably be on that same DL. Yankees have treated Andy TERRIBLY!! ST proves nothing about a batting average..YOU WILL ALL SEE SOON THAT PHELPS IS NO STAR. Thn I can say, ” I TOLD YOU SO.”

  37. bloodyank78 March 28th, 2007 at 3:05 am

Hazel Green; aka; Mrs. Andy Phillips.

Seriously, he had many AB’s last season to show his stuff and shine. He had a few hotstreaks, but could never get anything going. His plate discipline was garbage; as shown by his horrible OBP. He didn’t hit for average, he didn’t for power as shown by his .394 slugging; he was below replacement level… come on, he simply could not cut it last year with almost 250 major league AB’s to prove himself. The truth hurts sometimes.

  38. Don March 28th, 2007 at 7:39 am

Hey, we’re being laughed at regarding the possible, or perhaps probable, starting of Carl Pavano on opening day. Take a look at Jeff Pasan’s column on Yahoo Sports:

Call Carl whatever you want for now. Come the end of the season, I hope to call him “2007 AL Comeback Player of the Year.”
