Pavano sharp against Twins

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 27, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Carl Pavano seems done for the day: 6 6 2 2 1 0. Bring on the Devil Rays! It’s still hard to believe.

He got four Twins to ground into double plays. Pavano tossed 82 pitches, 46 for strikes.

Joe Torre told us before the game that they will probably make their roster decisions on Friday.

I hope he repeats this performance on monday!

And walks off to a standing O!

  2. kerouac March 27th, 2007 at 2:53 pm

not the toughest lineup in the world but king carl kept the ball down all game. only one hard-hit ball in the two-run inning for minnesota. four DPs. that’s a reward for keeping the ball down. i’m pleased with the performance.

  3. MelHall27 March 27th, 2007 at 2:59 pm

What difference does it make? He’s no Dice-K. All is lost in Yankeeland.

  4. nyyfaninlaaland March 27th, 2007 at 3:02 pm

When did Pavano morph into C M Wang? Hey, one can hope, and the opener was supposed to be Wang’s. Maybe Carl has a future as an impressionist.

  5. Emobacca March 27th, 2007 at 3:03 pm

Did Pavano drop his secondary pitches altogether? I didnt see anything besides sinkers and the 0 K’s reflects that

  6. kasey March 27th, 2007 at 3:03 pm

he still looks out of shape, but he certainly settled down as the game progressed. i wasn’t especially impressed, but he wasn’t terrible.

  7. Rick (Columbus) March 27th, 2007 at 3:03 pm

    Good news on Carl!
    Peter,
Quick question, How come when you Google (images) of
Carl Pavano’s fiancée “Gia Allemand” your picture shows up on the first page?
    That killed me…
    BTW she is much hotter.

  8. Peter Abraham March 27th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Turns out Pavano is a sinker ball pitcher. I had forgotten.

  9. murphydog March 27th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

OK, I’m going to let Pavs slide. It’s one start at a time from here on. “Good luck, Carl. I’m pulling for you – - ya’ fat load, ya.”

  10. Jeff March 27th, 2007 at 3:09 pm

Pete, please tell us sanity will prevail and Phelps (hr) will make the team over the putrid Andy Phillips (3 K so far)

  11. kasey March 27th, 2007 at 3:11 pm

    don’t count on it, jeff.

  12. Angel March 27th, 2007 at 3:12 pm

I just wonder if sanity will prevail around here if Phelps does make the team and goes into a slump or makes errors at first base during the season. Because thats a given too.

  13. kasey March 27th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

what’s that you were saying, angel? i was too busy watching phelps knock in the go-ahead run (his 2nd RBI of the game).

  14. Avery Blasts Brodeur March 27th, 2007 at 3:17 pm

Josh Phelps looks good again today with Phillips going down on strikes in 3 ABs
I hope Joe Torre makes the right call and selcts phelps. Sorry Andy, better luck if you catch on somewhere else.

    Joe can’t play favorites anymore.

  15. Ben March 27th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

Pete, I hope you and your colleagues heavily criticize Joe and Brian if they choose Phillips over Phelps. Phelps has won the job this spring. Phillips was poor when given extended playing time in ’06, and his mother’s unfortunate accident aside, he has not shown any indication that we should expect him to be better in ’07. Phelps is also younger.

  16. kasey March 27th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

meanwhile, phillips is 0-4 with 4 Ks. this is professional baseball. it isn’t about who’s the nicest guy or who has endured the most trying familial trauma. it’s about who has EARNED a spot on the team. andy phillips has done absolutely NOTHING this spring to earn a spot on a major league ballclub. phelps, on the other hand, has done everything he can.

minky is 5-38 this spring. the yankees are going to need SOME offensive production out of 1st base and phillips isn’t going to give it to them.

  17. Emobacca March 27th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

    Nice golden sombreo Andy

  18. Angel March 27th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

I think you missed the point. I’m not saying he SHOULDN’T make the team, so there is no need for a comment like that. I’m saying I can just see people around here conveniently forgetting how hard they pushed for his inclusion if he does make the team and goes into a slump or makes errors at first at some point during the season, which will happen because as good as he’s looked no one can keep that up indefinitely.

  19. Avery Blasts Brodeur March 27th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

    see ya later Andy!!
They (Torre/Cash) can’t justify taking phillips in any way, shape, or form.

Pete, have you heard anything on this front?

  20. kasey March 27th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

absolutely, phelps will struggle at some point. he can’t keep this up. there’s a reason the guy’s well-traveled. but, if last year and this spring are any indication, phillips would be a far worse choice.

  21. Jeff March 27th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

Angel, no one’s saying Phelps is going to continue to hit .450, or even .290. But if he can hit 15 hs in 250 ABs, that can provide an enormous boost to a club. Phillips is an automatic out, and was so most of last year. I agree with Kasey: if Torre picks him, it will be because he is a nice guy and has endured a lot. That is simply unjustifiable, especially in this city.

  22. Rob(Middletown, CT) March 27th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

    “see ya later Andy!!”

Ouch. I want Phelps to make the team, but then again I was arguing for Phillips this time last year. The guy’s been through a lot, too. So, while I do hope that cold, hard facts are the basis for roster decisions, I’ll be a little sad to see AP designated for assignment.

  23. Jake March 27th, 2007 at 3:30 pm

Phelps is just hitting way too much for Phillips to make the team over him.

The chance at the pop of Phelps and hitting 20+ homers is too good to pass up right now.

Lets face it. Phillips had his shot last year. He got a ton of at bats and didnt do it.

  24. Richard C March 27th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

WAY TO GO, CARL!!!!!!!! I knew you could do it. I will be in The Stadium on Saturday (the 7th) to watch you get your second win of the season against the Orioles. Can’t wait!

  25. Ben March 27th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Look, the whole reason that Cash picked up Phelps on waivers was that Andy didn’t do the job last year in extended playing time. Cash likely wanted to see how Phillips responded to a little competition in camp and how Phelps looked up close, all for relatively little cost. I think we have our answer.

  26. Angel March 27th, 2007 at 3:34 pm

Dont think I’m advocating Andy at all, because I wasn’t. I think on performance Phelps has more than earned it, which is what ST is about. I just want people to remember what he’s shown he’s capable of and that they wanted him over Andy when he’s not hitting like he is.

  27. 2007 Yankees March 27th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

I also think Phelps should win the roster spot over Andy. Andy could still pass through waivers and end up in Scranton. If not, perhaps somebody else might find a way to get the most out of him. We all thought he could be a ML player, it just hasn’t worked out that way.
Phelps is a better hitter, a faster runner and equal at 1B

  28. Fernando Alejandro March 27th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

If we needed a late inning first base defensive replacement than it would definetely be Andy, only the Yankees are looking to fill in the right handed side of a first base platoon. They’re not going to look to replace Mientkievich in the 9th inning, so there’s no need for a strong defender. There is a need for another first baseman who can get hits since he will be playing half the time as apart of that platoon.

  29. Jb March 27th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

    Britton Sucks….. Good Job Cashman

  30. Rob(Middletown, CT) March 27th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Phelps is faster than AP? I thought he was dreadfully slow (I’ve read that more than once). Also, he’s supposed to be a bad defensive 1B, whereas AP is roughly average. His bat should make up for that and then some (hopefully).

  31. Angel March 27th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Ouch. Well that was a waste of Phelps nice day with the bat to lose it like that.

  32. Fernando Alejandro March 27th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Really? I remember AP being a great first baseman, and Phelps wasn’t necessarily bad just inexperienced at the position.

  33. Lori March 27th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

Was that Britton pitching at the end? Aaargh.

Anyway – has Proctor not given up a run all ST? How many innings has he pitched? His line on mlb.com box score says 0.00 ERA.

  34. hmmm March 27th, 2007 at 3:58 pm

    “Britton Sucks….. Good Job Cashman”

Jaret Wright sucks. you have no idea what you are talking about.

  35. Stormy March 27th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Kasey, why do you continue to say that Pavano is out of shape? He’s a big guy — 6’5″. He’s weighed 230-240 his entire career, and he’s probably a little under that this year. He’s not a very graceful guy and in fact he’s rather awkward (even when he walks). But out of shape? I don’t think so.

And all that matters is that his shoulder is healthy.

Also, I guess people around here have short memories. Pavano is a sinkerballer who gives up a lot of hits and doesn’t strike many out — he’s like Wang without that ridiculous velocity. Pavano needs a strong defense behind him. If he gets that this year, he should be good enough to fill out the fourth spot in the rotation.

  36. Fernando Alejandro March 27th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

I beleive this was Proctor’s 8th scoreless inning.

  37. Zander March 27th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

Worrisome factoid: In his big 2004 year Pavano struck out about 6 per 9 innings. This spring it’s 5 K’s in 18+ inn, or about 2.4 per 9.

Anyone know whether Cashman defers to Torre on the 25 man roster or makes/ratifies the decisions?

  38. Peter Abraham March 27th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

Yes, Ben, the media will attack Joe over his choice of the backup first baseman. Because clearly that position will determine how the Yankees fare this season.

  39. 2007 Yankees March 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

I dunno….Phelps looks faster running than Andy but that could be because Phelps has actually made it to first base this Spring…lol

  40. Ben March 27th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

Funny. Peter, don’t you realize this is life or death, here??
