Pregame chatter: Andy Pettitte said he felt fine a day after his bullpen. he will throw another pen tomorrow. It seems like he will be set for the regular season and pitch in the first series. … Chien-Ming Wang had 45 throws in the outfield and looked strong. “I’ll think sooner,” said Wang when asked if when he would return.

Hmmm – I wonder how this Scranton team will fare today.

  2. kasey

did phelps homer? i woke up late and turned on espn.

  3. Lori

Yeah – Abreu and Phelps both homered. So far Pavano has not given up a hit.

  4. Nick

I’m liking what I see from Pavano… Bring on the house that Ruth built

  5. StandingO'Neill

Pete…I’m trying to figure out the rotation for the first week. Obviously as we have heard it appears Pavano will be game 1, then who is two, moose or pettitte? If Igawa is going Friday I would think it would be Pettitte on Wednesday, that sound right to you?

  6. Andrew

Hey Pete, maybe next time you talk to Cashman or Torre you can ask them about the Andy Phillips/Josh Phelps battle. Josh Phelps has clearly shown he can hit this spring, while Andy has shown nothing. At what point does reality outweigh loyalty?

  7. kasey

“i’m liking what i see from pavano.”

really? are we watching the same game?

  8. Josh

talk about cheap hit after cheap hit…

  9. Lori

Nick – looks like we’ve jinxed him.

I’m listening on gameday audio so have no idea what the pitches are looking like. Can anyone shed some light on this?

  10. Mike

Pavano looks excellent. These have all been bloopers. He’ll have an ugly line, but he looks good. If he can throw like this all year, the Yanks are in good shape.

  11. kasey

cheap hits, indeed, but pavano’s thrown 40+ pitches in 1 2/3 innings, given up 2 runs on 4 hits. that’s not a good outing. he doesn’t look confident. keep seeing what you want. the W-L column is going to be pretty hard to deny.

  12. Josh

The good: not very much hit hard off pavano

The bad: way too many pitches after 2

  13. Russell

OK Phelps just hit another homer, this time as DH. If this guy doesn’t make the team then the Yankees hired someone from the Red Sox to make roster decisions.

  14. kasey

he looks out of shape and lacking in confidence. still.

he is getting in on a lot of guys’ hands, though. he certainly doesn’t look awful by any stretch, but i would hardly use the word “excellent.” his pitch count is high and he’s been in trouble both innings so far.

  15. murphydog

    kasey:

It’s the “Rumpelstiltskin Effect.” You just cannot wake up after a two year sleep and pick up where you left off. He will be inconsistent and lack confidence for quite a while until he gets enough innings under his belt again.

  16. Josh

yankees will be on espn on friday again at 1 just fyi

  17. hmmm

Phelps will make the team. rest easy.

his performance is such that Torre would actually be criticized in the media if he took Phillips.

  18. Josh

Pavano with a strong finish in the last 3 innings

  19. Peter Abraham

Andrew: I’m aware they have a decision to make regarding first base. And Phillips has not shown “nothing.” He has played in the majors before. The decision isn’t based solely on spring training.

  20. rbj

    Well, decent line from Carl:
5 IP, 6 hits, 2 (e)r, 1 BB. No Ks, but a decent outing from the looks of the boxscore.

  21. Mike

Line looks alot better now, huh? I’m telling you, he’s throwing the ball well. Maybe I’ve just been around enough pitching to know when a guy has pretty decent stuff, but I thought it was fairly obvious. Part of the reason his pitch count was so high was because so many balls were fouled off. He’s never been a strikeout pitcher, but if he can command his pitches, he can make it very difficult to hit the ball anywhere with much authority, and that’s precisely what he did today. I was very impressed.

  22. Josh

hes out to pich the sixth, hit redmond, now hes facing the heart of the order this will beinteresting

  23. Josh

    great outting from pavano

no strikeouts, but his sinker was really working today, almost all of the hits were ground balls, and they turned 4 DPs today.. if he can do this everytime out im happy

  24. kris

It looks like Wang is going to be fine. If he remains injury-free, he will be the BEST Asian import this season. At 600K/year, Wang is a true bargain.

Sorry, Mike, Kasey, and all of you Dice-K/Bosox fans… Keep hoping…

  25. hmmm

“And Phillips has not shown “nothing.â€? He has played in the majors before. The decision isn’t based solely on spring training.”

true, but he has shown “nothing” in the majors. he was below replacement level last year.

  26. hmmm

“he looks out of shape and lacking in confidence. still.”

you keep saying this, and yet nothing i have read anywhere suggested anything different than Pavano came into camp in fantastic shape after working his butt off all winter.

i don’t really like the guy either, but he’s not “out of shape”.

  27. Ben

It would be nice if Pavano had a K or two today. It’s a hard game when you don’t strike anyone out. I’m glad he is pitching well today, but it’s tough to make a living as a pitcher if you can’t miss bats. Pavano is no Chien Ming Wang. What’s he got, 5Ks in 18 IPs this spring?

  28. Rob(Middletown, CT)

Encouraging stuff. I don’t expect the man to be great… merely decent will be just fine, thanks.

Peter: “And Phillips has not shown “nothing.â€? He has played in the majors before.”

This is true. It is also true that AP was bad in the majors. I like the guy and all, and was rooting for him last year to make the team and play well, but only the first part happened. He had a fair shot and didn’t perform. I hope the Yanks take a chance on Phelps.

  29. Brian

    Good news about Andy
I was able to score some cheap nosebleeds for Thursdays game, so I’m hoping I’ll see his return to the Bronx. I’ll be dusting off the Pettitte Jersey for the day.

  30. Eddie da Rican

    Dear Mr. Selig:

Please excuse Bobby Abreu from any further Spring Trainings in the future. He has shown that it is highly over rated.

    Thank you.

  31. Mike

Kris, where the hell is the Wang thing coming from? I have never said who would be better this season, Wang or Dice-K. In fact, I just don’t know. But both are excellent pitchers, with Dice-K being much more conventional.

And I love how early on today I was criticized for saying Pavano looks good. Now he was “sharp” and “impressive”. It never ceases to amaze me.

  32. murphydog

    kasey:

I forgot to mention earlier that you have to be very careful what you say about Pavano’s appearance around here. (”he looked out of shape”).

I called him a “fat load” a couple of days ago for his sloppy appearance on the mound and several bloggies practically had a stroke defending Carlo’s svelte figure. (I dunno. You think it’s that “man-crush” thing?)

  33. hmmm

“(I dunno. You think it’s that “man-crushâ€? thing?)”

    i think it’s a “truth” thing.

  34. hmmm

“Pavano spent a good portion of his winter working out in Phoenix and strengthening his core, which had been weakened significantly in the past couple of years and prompted a chain reaction in his body that led to the stiff — and, eventually, inactive — Pavano we all saw.

Supposedly, he’s become more fluid. The trainer who worked with Pavano this winter, Brett Fischer, also helped train Chien-Ming Wang this offseason and actually put the two pitchers on a mound side-by-side recently.

Fischer said that Wang looked good and in better shape than last season, but that Pavano looked “amazing.” Something to think about.”

  35. May

Seem like the Yanks will speed up Wang’s rehab program, but it is too quick??

Even he looks great, isn’t it better take it slowly??

All the reporters in Taiwanese are reporting about his injury updates day by day, isn’t it a pressure for him to speed himself up??

For some people , like me, sometimes we will speed up ourselves from something due to expectation, hope isn’t the case for Wang…

    Take it slowly, don’t rush….
