Get well soon, Jeff Karstens

Peter Abraham
March

No. 5 starter candidate Darrell Rasner did not advance his career tonight:

4.2 9 7 7 2 2 84 pitches/54 strikes

As for Karstens, he will play catch tomorrow and Joe Torre said he is still in the mix to go north.

The Yankees are down 10-2 and my decision not to bother keeping score seems like a wise one.

Since Darrell and Jeff flamed out in their last starts, who is our next canidate for 5th starter?

  2. Jennifer

Does any pitcher want to make the team? Everyone is pitching horribly tonight!!

  3. Gloomy

we have no other candidates, we should have signed zito like I said. who’s laughing now?

  4. Ty

    @Gloomy

$100mill+ for a man who has fared poorly in the AL East? Let the Giants have him. BTW, the only ones who aren’t laughing are the ones who actually felt that Karstens or Rasner were viable options. I let those wagons pass so I’m LMAO.

Everbody has bad starts…. relax people.

  6. JDnotDrew

Once they are on the team and not trying to make the team , any one of them will be fine.

  7. David

Rasner was having a good spring until tonight. Relax people.

  8. hmmm

you do realize that the yankees will only need a 5th starter 1 or 2 times until Wang gets back. i don’t think that warrants a 7 year $126M committment to Barry Zito.

  9. Mike S.

Zito? You are forgetting that with the salary cap, the Yanks pay $1.40 to the dollar for each free agent they sign.

ZZito signed for $126 million. That would cost the Yanks $$176.4 million with the luxury tax.

    Good point JD.

It’s ONE start. Before this, Rasner was fine.

What is ONE start? Consider this. In 1965, Koufax (when he wwas KOUFAX) lost to the Mets—when the Mets sucked. Who ddid he lose to? Someone who did well in his career as a rreliever, but who was not much of a starter. A guy named Tug McGraw. Anything can happen in one game.

Relax. The #5 starter will pitch what, two games before Wang comes back? This is a team that won the division despite starting 11-19 in 2005; a team that won the division last year despite missing Sheff and Matsui for over 100 games each.

    Damn keys sticking.

told you rasner was garbage. he is a nothing pitcher. washington nationals leftover. not an mlb pitcher

one thing i love about commenting on this blog is that when i disagree with someone, i usually don’t have to rebut, since there’s usually a handful of others that say it better than i possibly could before i get a chance.

I am so tired of people who seem to think that we need to go undefeated for the year. Cashman has done a great job bringing in young arms and not overpaying for the Gil Meche’s of the world. It will all work out!!!

Through 2006, AFL and this Spring, Rasner has kept up a consistent pattern of 3 strong starts followed by an implosion. I’m not sure what kind of pitcher Rasner is, but this pattern sometimes shows up in a finesse pitcher who doesn’t have the velocity to compensate when his location is off. I seem to recall Andy Pettitte having this problem his first few seasons (before he started training with Clemens).

No need for panic buttons. The staff is in better shape than we read about. There’s no need for a #5 starter until mid April. Wang will be back by then. This gives the Yankees time with Karstens and not rush him. The season starts off with Pavano, Pettitte, Mussina, and Igawa.
