No need for panic buttons. The staff is in better shape than we read about. There's no need for a #5 starter until mid April. Wang will be back by then. This gives the Yankees time with Karstens and not rush him. The season starts off with Pavano, Pettitte, Mussina, and Igawa.

Through 2006, AFL and this Spring, Rasner has kept up a consistent pattern of 3 strong starts followed by an implosion. I'm not sure what kind of pitcher Rasner is, but this pattern sometimes shows up in a finesse pitcher who doesn't have the velocity to compensate when his location is off. I seem to recall Andy Pettitte having this problem his first few seasons (before he started training with Clemens).

I am so tired of people who seem to think that we need to go undefeated for the year. Cashman has done a great job bringing in young arms and not overpaying for the Gil Meche's of the world. It will all work out!!!

one thing i love about commenting on this blog is that when i disagree with someone, i usually don't have to rebut, since there's usually a handful of others that say it better than i possibly could before i get a chance.

Zito? You are forgetting that with the salary cap, the Yanks pay $1.40 to the dollar for each free agent they sign.

ZZito signed for $126 million. That would cost the Yanks $$176.4 million with the luxury tax.

Good point JD.

It's ONE start. Before this, Rasner was fine.

What is ONE start? Consider this. In 1965, Koufax (when he wwas KOUFAX) lost to the Mets---when the Mets sucked. Who ddid he lose to? Someone who did well in his career as a rreliever, but who was not much of a starter. A guy named Tug McGraw. Anything can happen in one game.

Relax. The #5 starter will pitch what, two games before Wang comes back? This is a team that won the division despite starting 11-19 in 2005; a team that won the division last year despite missing Sheff and Matsui for over 100 games each.

you do realize that the yankees will only need a 5th starter 1 or 2 times until Wang gets back. i don't think that warrants a 7 year $126M committment to Barry Zito.
