BOOOO, the yankees should have traded Melky Cabrera while his value reached its peak.. they should have made Thompson the 4th outfielder. Cashman has to be held accountable for yet ANOTHER mistake.

Hey gloomy…..take your negativity to another blog. I, for one, am tired of you trashing everything this team does.

If you are SO SMART, maybe you should call the Royals and offer your services to them.

  4. Rey22 March 29th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Someone’s going to have to place Gloomy on suicide watch. It’s a long season, and like every other team, the Yankees will lose at least 60 games. If he snaps in every one of those 60, he’ll be well dead by October.

  5. G For Giambino March 29th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Sadly I must agree with Gloom. Should of traded Melky while his value was at his peak. I expect Melky to have a down year with his probable erratic season long AB’s. Nice guy, but overrated by a fanbase whos longing for a young outfielder prospect.

Let’s face it gents, Melky will never be a starter here unless an injury occurs. The guy has no power for a corner outfielder. And please don’t say CF, he’s never played CF consistently. Kevin Thompson could fill in for Melkys spot on the roster and we wouldn’t miss a beat.

Oh well, at least we have Melkys K/BB ratio to look forward, which I must say at that age, was pretty impressive.

  6. Mack March 29th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

He’ll be dead? So will we if we have to keep reading it.

  7. steve March 29th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

come on guys. melky is only 21. give him a break. the power will come. he can hit 20+ home runs. hes got a good arm and can hit for average. if the yanks don’t pick up abreus contract next year then melky will be our man. Unless someone like cabrera dtrain or santana are on the trade block melky is a good addition to the team.

  9. Nick B. March 29th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Yeah but who would we have traded him for and what hole would we have filled. No team was going to offer a good starter or first baseman for him….so we would have got a decent reliever that Torre could have burned out in a year. At least this year we could have something for the long haul instead of adding a guy to Joe Torre’s Club of burning out arms? If you could tell me one decent player they could have got straight up besides that bum Mike Gonzalez I will agree with you Gloomy?

  10. steve March 29th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

nick b you hit the nail right on the head. unless some team is offering a front line starter or 1st baseman then i wouldn’t trade him. thats pretty much it … well maybe a 3rd base prospect just in case. heh

  11. rainbowtrout March 29th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

I agree that Melky’s trade value will only go down from here. And the Yankee fanbase is interesting to say the least. They get so desperate to find some good young players to root for that they end up completely overrating guys like Melky, Karstens and Rasner. There are even some goofballs that think Colter Bean should be with the Yanks. Obviously, they didn’t watch him last season when he would throw a ball two feet out of the strikezone, then walk around the mound for a few minutes licking his fingers, finally getting around to throw another 75mph slurve two feet outside again.

  12. Zander March 29th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Thompson and Reese are 28,29. Historically, guys who don’t reac the majors by that age are extremely unlikely to become anything more than pinch-runners. That’s a Bill James stat.

  13. G For Giambino March 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    Bill James? Heh

Did you know that Bill James on record(google it) that Derek Jeter could be the worst defensive shortstop of all time.

you should just go to bosox forums and pxx on their chances instead. I am sure a hopeless pessimist like you can find plenty wrong with the mighty red sox rotation. Or maybe you can’t… in that case you are just a bosox fan in disguise.

  15. JDnotDrew March 29th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Melky has an amazing arm that is also very accurate. He bats both sides and his power WILL come. What shows he isn’t a good young out fielder? What are you basing your opinions on. Kevin Long gets a base hit or two and all of a sudden we don’t need Melky? Mature Malky, young Tabata , and an all star(free agent pick up or trade). Pretty good future for Yanks outfied.

Cash is intent on keeping players that are cost controlled. It’s the only way that he believes that he can add more established stars in the future while lowering the payroll. That’s the reason he is reluctant to trade Melky. It’s not really that complicated.

  19. hmmm March 29th, 2007 at 11:27 pm

guys, gloomy is obviously f*ing with you guys. i fell for it too over the last few days, but this post should have tipped you off.

there is NO WAY this guy isn’t just trying to bait you guys.

cashman has to be accountable for NOT trading a guy with a .360 OBP as a 21 year old in the majors?

    come on, it’s a ruse.

  20. Jake March 29th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

Guys like “gloomy” give Yank fans a bad name.

I dont think hes actually a Yank fan. More like a Sox fan.

  21. Nick B. March 29th, 2007 at 11:58 pm

This is kinda funny about Jeter, Farns and Arod. Obviously not real but I got a good laugh.

  24. Alex March 30th, 2007 at 12:15 am

I’m rooting for Phelps, Nieves & Henn to make the final cuts.
They are defintley better options than the more expensive & aging & sucking Phillips, Pratt & Villone.
If Cashman still have the power & balls, these are the guys you go with, not fading, ineffective veterans.

    Alex,

If Kepner of the Times is correct then you’ve gotten your wish. And you’re right, if you’re going with fringe players, at least go young (and cheap). There’s a chance they might get better. Seems like Kevin Long is a good batting coach and I look forward to seeing what he can do in the bigs.

BTW, Pete (or any of the other experts here on the blog, lol). How has Alex looked at the plate? Does he seem a lot more relaxed? Do you know who he’s been working with for batting? Who was he working with last year? I heard something like he went out of the organization last year for advice. Thanks a million.

Pete, this is getting ridiculous, you need to start up registration.

I agree, though I do not lump Nieves into the group. Nieves is simply not very good by any stretch.
I like the idea with going with younger, cheaper options…but that doesn’t mean you push all potentially useful veterans to the side. Pratt is likely done, but if you ask me who is more likely to produce in the 115-120 at-bats or so the backup catcher is going to get, I take Pratt over Nieves.
With Villone/Henn, it’s different. Henn throws very hard, and has a chance to actually still become something better then simply average. Villone, at best, will be average…and you’ll be lucky to get even that. It’s a no-brainer.
Phelps? Another no-brainer. He’ll be a threat every time he comes to the plate…though you will see plenty of times where he’ll go up there and look like a fool. He’s a light version of Richie Sexson, and given Sexson’s tool set, that isn’t exactly a huge compliment. But he’s better then Phillips, and gives the Yankees a legit right-handed power bat off of the bench.

Ask and I shall receive! Just came across an article at the Hartford site about Alex working with Kevin Long. “See it and hit it” That’s all there is to it!

  31. Chris March 30th, 2007 at 8:08 am

Shame to see Thompson stuck in Yankee limbo. Hes good enough to be a quality 4th outfielder/bench player, but theres just no room for him. Hes also been almost too good to simply give away, because in the past few years there hasnt been much depth in AAA incase of an injury. Hopefully now that theres more young OF talent in AA/AAA he can be a throw in guy in a trade or something.

Colter Beans in a somewhat similar situation. Minor league #s are too good to simply give him away, but hes not good enough to make the team outright. Im sure someone will take him when he becomes a free agent.

  32. Mark March 30th, 2007 at 9:13 am

Why all the Melky bashing? He’s by far the best defensive outfielder we have. His AB’s last year were remarkably mature for a 21 yr old, and he’s got lots of time to get stronger and generate more power. Who would you rather have as a 4th outfielder?
