A few more updates from Legends Field

Peter Abraham
March

Darrell Rasner is on the team and is being lined up to start on Sunday, April 8.

Ron Villone confirmed that the Yankees have asked him to pitch for Class AAA Scranton. He is undecided as to what he wants to do. He is waiting to see if he has any other options.

Carl Pavano seemed quite thrilled to get the nod. I’ve seriously never seen him this happy, obviously with good reason. “I’d say it’s come full circle,” he said.

I’d say so.

Off soon to the minor-league complex to see Pettitte and Mussina pitch. Back later with a report on those guys.

If Pavano goes 5 1/3 innings and gives up 4 runs on opening day, please let’s not throw him under the bus.

  2. Todd Drew

Excellent. Excellent. Excellent. We are ready!

  3. Jesse

Peter, if you have the chance can you get us the reactions of Phelps, Nieves, and Henn on making the roster?

  4. Todd Drew

It’s good to hear that Pavano is excited. I’m excited for him.

  5. mel

Was he as giddy as a schoolgirl?…uhh…Speaking of… I read his girlfriend “dumped” him. Any new passengers in the front seat, Pete?

Good to see Carl ready to rise to the challenge. It will be his defining moment.

  6. Ben

I’m not sure Villone will have a lot of options, given how he pitched the second half of last year and so far this spring. I was pulling for Henn to make the team, but part of me wanted Villone for the first half of the season. Each of the last four years, he’s posted a great ERA in the first half before ballooning after the All-Star Break. He just looks done now. Like, done done.

  7. Stephen

I think “full circle” will be if Pavano pitches well (or even decently). I’m rooting for him, but he shouldn’t be patting himself on the back until he walks off the mound Monday.

  8. Rich

I don’t want Villone blocking Britton. Handedness is overrated.

  9. Stormy

So now that they’ve told Rasner, is Bruney’s inclusion on the roster official?

  10. jennifer

I read on another board that Andy wanted to know if Josh found out that he was on the team yet, he wanted to go congratulate him in person.

This guy is truely a class act!

  11. Todd Drew

    Rich,
Nobody is going to block Britton if he goes to Scranton and pitches well.

  12. Scooter

    Jennifer -
Joe said the same thing about Andy in his audio clip – he drove over to congratulate Phelps

Yeah a totally solid and good guy…

Speaking of good guys – wonder how Aaron Small is doing with Seattle?

  13. Rich

    Todd,

I would also prefer Colter Bean to Villone.

  14. jennifer

I can’t listen to the audio i’m at work :( did he say anything else interesting?

I read somewhere that aaron is back at aaa. i’ll have to search for an article.

  15. Stormy

Small was reassigned to their minor league team.

His stats in the spring: 4 IP, 9 hits, 5 ER, 2/2 BB/K, 11.25 ERA.

  16. Todd Drew

    Rich,
    Villone didn’t make the team.

  17. Grace

    Peter:

looks like your guys’ book came out early a bit, today I got the e-mail (sent yesterday, the 30th), I think due to March 31 (today)is wang’s brithday..

A lot people said that while reading you might need tissues with you..

I will go to pick up my book later today…

  18. Matt Waters

Damn, Andy sounds like a class guy, all the way. Same goes for Villone, who was always accountable last season, even when it was obvious his arm was totally shot. That counts for something, big time. You’ve got to remember these guys are people who happen to play baseball, not baseball players who also happen to be people. I really hope Andy catches on somewhere. What about the Marlins? They were planning on using Boone to platoon with Jacobs, but he hasn’t looked good at all this spring. Maybe Phillips could get a shot there.

  19. Rich

I realize that, Todd, but I fear that he would be too tempting an option at SWB even if he was merely mediocre.

  20. Todd Drew

    Rich,
Those days are over. This 25-man roster proves that.

  21. Doreen

Does anyone know why Andy Phillips is playing in today’s game? Was he not yet put on waivers? Or does that not take effect until opening day?

  22. David

    He alreay cleared waivers.

  23. Lori

And AP is playing 2nd base. Actually, I think this just goes to show how professional of a player he is. He has to be disappointed, but still made today’s trip and is doing his job.

  24. kasey

good news all the way around. hopefully pettitte feels good coming out of his game today.

  25. chazz h

I really hope Andy Phillips stay with the organization and gets another crack at the big leagues. He seems like a class act- and had a very rough spring (dealing with his Mom’s car accident and everything else).

  26. Todd Drew

    Kasey,
Player decisions are being made differently now. Things are looking good.

  27. saucy

    “David
    March 30th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
    He alreay cleared waivers.”

Not that I don’t believe you, but is this confirmed anywhere?

  28. mel

Wow, big news about the “Gambler”. Kenny Rogers had surgery to clear a clot and repair his arteries. Hope things go well for him.

  29. Matt

    Mel:

I heard the clot turned out to be made of pine tar.

  30. Stacey

“Wow, big news about the “Gamblerâ€?. Kenny Rogers had surgery to clear a clot and repair his arteries. Hope things go well for him.

Was the artery blocked with pine tar?

  31. mel

You guys are terrible! But, what the heck he’s still alive so I guess we can joke about it.

It wasn’t worth swallowing the evidence…

In Japanese we call that “bachi” which is bad karma.

  32. Stormy

Did Rogers have a blocked artery? That’s a possible sign on steroid use. Ahem. Just sayin’.

  33. saucy

    As is attacking Camera men…

  34. Neil

i would rather have then send down Henn/Bruney on april 8, and call up Clippard. Then send down clippard and callup Britton. Then send down Britton(unless he’s lights out) and recall Henn/Bruney 10 days later.
We need a long-reliever. If Rasner starts april 8th and gets rocked, the entire bullpen will suffer. Also what if there’s an injury to the SP on april 9th in the 1st inning, the entire bullpen will also suffer in that case.

  35. Russell

Phelps made the team… there is a God.

  36. asburyboss

Villone should be sent to Trenton.

  37. Stacey

Russell: “Phelps made the team… there is a God.”

Did you enjoy your two day nap Russell? :-)

  38. Fernando Alejandro

    Bruney just got shelled.

  39. Russell

Those Tigers are a strong team… we just gave them another lion to add to the pack with Sheffield.

Stacey: yes, I dreamt the Yankees won the World Series and was disappointed when I woke up and realized there is still 6 months remaining until they win :)

  40. Russell

Villone should be sent to A ball lol

  41. Nick B.

I can’t wait for opening day so there is something to talk about here beyond who are third 1st baseman is or the 13 pitcher on the team is. Monday at 1;05 can’t come soon enough!!1

  42. hmmm

“i would rather have then send down Henn/Bruney on april 8, and call up Clippard”

depends. if the yankees honestly view Clippard as a long term option for their future rotation, you don’t want to start his arbitration clock if you are just bringing him and sending him down. that’s what guys like rasner and karstens are for, plugging holes.

let the real prospects pitch in AAA and bring them up when you know they are ready.

  43. Rich Myers

Hey Rich – would you fee better if we looked into having Villone “disappeared” for you so there’s no way the Yankees make a decision that you’d be upset with.

Hate to see you agonizing over this. When you dislike a ball player you really give it your all. :) :):):

  44. rainbowtrout

I have a sinking feeling that Sheffield will have a monster season. How do you just take a bat like that out of your lineup? And get what looks like nothing from the trade in return?

  45. Chappy

There was no place for Sheffield to play with Abreu in right field and Melky’s emergence. Sanchez may never reach his potential, but it will be “Gary Who?” when Kevin Whelan starts King bitches for our pen.

  46. Mike S.

Did Rogers have a blocked artery? That’s a possible sign on steroid use. Ahem. Just sayin’…..from Stormy.

Ahem. Didn’t Big Papi have a heart scare last year? Just sayin’….

Neil—you would kill all of their options in a month!

  47. hmmm

“I have a sinking feeling that Sheffield will have a monster season. How do you just take a bat like that out of your lineup? And get what looks like nothing from the trade in return?”

the yankees got 18 seasons of pre-free agency players and you are going to judge the trade before a single regular season game? wow.

let’s look back in 3-4 years at what the yankees got.

  48. hmmm

“Neil—-you would kill all of their options in a month!”

that’s not how options work. once you bring the player up, it’s an option year. you can shuttle them back and forth as much as you like during that year and it’s still 1 option.

  49. rainbowtrout

“There was no place for Sheffield to play with Abreu in right field and Melky’s emergence. Sanchez may never reach his potential, but it will be “Gary Who?â€? when Kevin Whelan starts King bitches for our pen.”

Ugh, not more of this Melky nonsense. He’s an OK backup outfielder with little to no power. You need to find a spot for Sheff’s bat.

The Tigers look really good, though.
